I moved into a new state, I have noo idea how to even leave my house without getting lost. And the weather is really hot and humid so it's hard for me to breathe.

So would walking and running in place be the same as walking outside?

No way. You're basically doing jumping jacks. If you watched "Animal House" and did "The Worm" you'd burn more calories and possibly have some fun at least! OK, a little bit softer now.

When you run in place, you use some of your muscles and almost none of your coordination muscles, which cold get you unbalanced. When some muscles get too strong, they can pull your weaker muscles when you really do go out and run.

Try out Yahoo! Maps; you can see your neighborhood and chart out a course. If you run a short but fast course, you can stay in shape since that will trigger your muscles to stay active (that's a good tip for traveling, too).

And Rejoice! The summer blast furnace is subsiding! You can run in the morning, too.

Yes and no
Yes you could still burn calories.
No you wouldn't learn the area near you any faster. Nor would you have the benefit of hills or different surfaces to walk on.
And just think how NOT FUN it would be to walk in place for an hour staring at a wall in your living room.

I would suggest a short walk (perhaps start off with 5 minutes away from your house and 5 min back) outside to start learning your way around go straight in one direction from your house so you don't get lost.

Eventually you will learn the neighborhood and who knows you might meet a neighbor or two. Maybe even find a walking buddy.

I'm sorry, but no, running and/or walking in place does not have the same effect on your body as either actually running/walking outside or using a treadmill. You are not using all of your muscles, and the ones that are being used, are not worked as hard.

I lived in a very humid state and always ran in the early morning hours or late at night. Perhaps that would work for you?

It will be very difficult for you to get the same effect running in place inside as to running outside.
You should go out and walk the area to discover your course.
There may be a nice park a short distance.

Talk to the neighbors, ask the mailman or police, if there is a fire station near they will know.
There may be a jogging walking trail close
Once you make friends you will be able to find someone to exercise with you.

Just don't stay a prisoner inside your house.

Anything that burns calories and exercises your muscles will be equivalent---lots of people use a treadmill in a gym for just that purpose. My sister-in-law use to jump and exercise on a small trampoline in the house to lose babyfat after her sons were born and it worked real well. Some people go to a mall to do daily walks when the weather is not so good.

yeah, but why would you want to just run/walk in place?

go out for a walk and get to know your surroundings! just bring a cell phone in case you get lost.
