it is a build up of cholesterol on the inner walls of those arteries that has calcified, or gotten very hard and brittle.

Medical resident - atherosclerosis is basically plaque buildup(cholesterol) in your blood vessels. After it ages calcium deposits can form in the plaques and when people have imaging such as a CT scan of the head the radiologist will note the calcium deposits. The carotid arteries are major vessels that supply the head with blood..the cavernous sinus is just an area in the head that the carotid arteries travel through..so that is just for location of the calcification.
