your vet rec science diet because vets sell it. There are much better foods out there. Assumming the puppies are healthy otherwise & not showing those symptoms due to other things then look for "all natural" foods. Natures recipe, Nutro, etc. Check the labels, you want the first few ingredients to be be meats or vegatables- no "middlings" or "by-products". Also add a little flaxseed to the food to help with the coats...

Yes! Canidae is wonderful and you'll probably see a dramatic change when they start eating that. Vets recommend Science Diet because they are vendors and get paid to sell it. I recommend other high quality brands such as Timberwolf Organics, Flint River Ranch, Merrick, Innova, Life's Abundance, Solid Gold, Wellness, etc. Try to stay away from brands such as Iams, Eukanuba, Purina, Beneful, Ol' Roy, Pedigree, Kibbles n Bits, The Goodlife Recipe, etc. Any dog food you can find at grocery stores/Wal-Mart/etc. are all garbage. They have tons of fillers and by-products. I highly recommend you switch to Canidae. Your pups will be so much happier eating that food and not having to scratch all the time.

Vets are great, but when it comes to nutrition they only receive general courses that takes in cats to rats, dogs to hogs. They don't compare ingredients in foods and tend to recommend foods they are familiar with..which of course are brands such as Science Diet and other store brands which get a lot of advertisement.
Canidae is a wonderful food. It would be an excellant choice to switch to.
**** vet do NOT "get paid" to sell Science Diet. They, like every other pet food seller, must buy it at wholesale price and then sell it at a retail price******

We put our cats on Science Diet and, as with any dry food, we have had to use it as only part of their diet. We also feed them meat and tuna (for the oils).
I would imagine this is similar for dogs. If they eat only dry food, then their coats will get dry and dandruffy as our cats coats did. This dryness could be why they are scratching their ears.
The bit about only eating it when they're really hungry is probably just boredom in eating the same thing all the time.

there has to be a reason why your vet recommended the science diet. another alternative to science diet is called purina one. its expensive just like the science diet. but it is a good dog food mine are on it because they have a sensitive stomach. but ask your vet first before switching the food .

ear scratching is a symptom of dog food allergies, second my vet also recommend science diet but one look at the science diet posters on the wall and i decided it was a conflict of interest, i use plain 'ol pedigree and it works great, my dogs are healthy and loving life

You should put you puppies on what ever your breeder had them on as a little puppy. If they start getting a little chubby on what the breeder recomemded, most dog foods also have weight control foods.

I would switch to Beneful. My dog eats every day at dinner time and in the morning not just when she is really hungry.
