depending on the particular religion we are talking about that is often very much the case. Certainly if you are talking Christianity this is so historically.
The problem is that children are taught by their parents, their peers, their schools as well as their religion concerning sexual behavior. And in modern times it has been difficult for any of those sources to encourage outside the parents truly responsible behaviors. If a child is taught to behave responsibly about sexual matters from the time they are talking and walking then when temptations come to behave irresponsibly they are more likely to behave responsibly. The religious aspect is secondary to what the child is taught at home, but still as important in the long run. children must be taught a strong spiritual connection at home for religion to have a strong influence later in life on morals and ethics.

Let us assume, for the purpose of responding to this question that, by religion, you mean divine standards as taught in God’s word the Bible. The Bible teaches that sexual intimacy is reserved for married couples only. Since the Bible is silent on the matter of birth control, while at the same time, vocal on the matter of the preciousness of life in the womb, birth control can be practiced by the couple so long as it does not equate to abortion.

Now, does the above encourage responsible behavior? Yes. Does it encourage self-control? Most definitely. What ignorance is involved in responsible behavior and self-control? None that I can see.

To a certain extent yes. As it promotes abstinence until marriage as the only acceptable behavior it ignores that we are biological beings and that a normal, healthy sex drive most times cannot be subverted. So you create a condition that birth control is ignored because it is never discussed, thereby creating a greater likelihood for STDs, AIDS and pregnancy. It also attaches the stigma of guilt to something that is natural which is wrong.

Hmm, I don't think it actively encourages ignorance as such, but I think as for as responsible behaviour goes - well most religions believe in marriage before children and no sex before marriage - so I guess thats KIND of responsible.

Some religions do encourage a strong lack of practical knowledge.

Not at all. It has nothing to do with religion, but rather the ignorance of the people involved. A religious person myself, I don't use any form of birth control, I'm married, free from STD's and I will accept and love as many children as God blesses me with.

I can't speak for everyone, but I do know that unwanted pregnancies and STD's come from bad behavior, not from religion. That bad behavior is both on the part of the sexually involved, and their parents/guardians whose place it was to educate them and prepare them for the world we live in.

But, on that note, I just have to disagree with a way of thinking that says "Don't have sex before you're married... but if you're going to have sex, do it like this, because it's more effective." WHAT?! That's slightly ridiculous. That's like saying "Don't slit your wrists! But if you DO decide to slit your wrists, do it like this, it's more effective."

My parents said don't, my religion said don't, and my heart agreed. That was enough for me. If these people understood the importance of their bodies, and the beauty of a sexual relationship when it's done RIGHT, we wouldn't NEED to be having this conversation. We're all part of something bigger and greater than ourselves, and knowing that makes all the difference. I can personally attest to that.

I'm sick and tired of a society where we are constantly creating problems and then having to find ways to get out of them, justifying them as we go. The law should never be made to suit people's perversions, and the perversions of society should never be allowed to define the law. Abortion, unwanted pregnancy, war, all this Gay politics, and even religion and anti-religion, all a result not of ignorance but of WILLFULL ignorance, and intent to change the law, not to adhere to it.

That is generalizing. You cannot judge one religion by the other. Paganism has got a good healthy, balanced natural view on sex.

In a way, I think that churches would rather avoid the entire concept of sexuality rather than teaching kids that the responsible and appropriate behavior is to wait until they are married to engage in sexual activity with one person in the bonds of marriage.

No. God does not encourage ignorance. God encourages understanding and responsible behavior. That's why, for example, God says that sex outside of marriage is bad because it's irresponsible.
