I want something medium sized, active, generally well trained. The only problem is that currently I only make about $200/mo, but I can work more at my other job, or pull a second job. I have money that I can spend, but I don't want to keep pulling money out of my bank account and would rather just use some of my paycheck to pay for the dog. I have family that may help pay for the dog, but I would rather want to make sure that I could pay for it by myself, and not have to rely on others.
Also, I don't have too much yard space, but live really close to an elementary school and state park. Any ideas on a good dog for me, a first time owner?

Well, first of all consider the expences. Call a local vet or two to ask about prices that you wll be charged for basic services in the first year. If you cannot afford those charges, you may only put your new puppy at rist of many viruses and diseases. I do know for a fact (I manage an animal hospital) that services ( including neutering/spaying and full vaccines/flea protection and all the new puppy toys and leashes, etc.) will cost from $700.00 in the first 8 months. Then you have to put in mind that yearly vaccination updates and more flea protection will cost another $200.00 or so. And what if your dog swallows something or breaks a hip, leg, etc. What if it gets hit by a car? For each of those right there, you are looking at $1500.00 for treatment EASY. So, I do understand you really really want a dog. But also, remember to be responsible and fair to the dog. I don't think your family will be that happy to foot an emergency bill, especially when it will cost sooo much. Maybe you could wait another 2-3 years and get yourself together, raise your finances, and than consider a puppy. As far as the breed, I would suggest some kind of a sheep dog. An australian sheepdog usually doesnt go over 40lbs, is beutiful, smart, but does need quite a bit of excercise. Good luck!

Border collie Cocker spaniel springer spaniel
I personally really like terriers. They have big personalities and are great companions.
You'll have to train the dog yourself. Maybe what you're asking is a "trainable" dog. Some are easier than others. Border collies, I've heard, are the smartest breed. I'm not sure if that's accurate but I could see how they would be.
Dogs are a lot of work. It doesn't seem like it when you're just thinking about "ok, I'll feed them, give them water, and take them for a walk". Dogs don't have a set schedule like you and things ALWAYS come up so just be prepared for set backs, unexpected vet visits = $$$$, and anything else that could possibly go wrong probably will at some point.
Not to discourage you. Dogs are great but they are a lot of work so just keep that in mind!

Find breeds you like and do your research on those breeds. You'll get a well trained dog out of any breed as long as you take the time to train it. Lets say by taking it to dog training classes. and again most dogs are active. As of cost wise. if you want a healthy dog get one from a breeder, although they cost more usually you get some kind of health guarentee for a year or two. where pet stores you get maybe 7 days. Just do your research and be prepaired for unexpected cost dogs.

Well first of all sir I wouldn't recommend you get any dog if are having slow money coming in, you as a human have to supply them with A LOT of Food, he has to visit the vet which I remind is not cheap there's much more also! but If you feel you can handle that, I would recommend that you DON'T get a dog that have to be groomed alo, because you would have to take him or her to get groomed every now and then which is money! you need a dog that don't mind staying in the house and doesn't have to get that much walking to let out that much energy if you are thinking about getting a big dog like a german shepard or border collie DON'T they need alot of room to run to release all that energy!
Also dogs don't like to be left alone for a long period of time if you were talking about getting DOUBLE jobs which means TIME that he has to spend alone!
I hoped I helped!

First NO dog regardless of breed/mix comes "generally well trained" . Dogs aren't born trained it is up to the owner to do the proper training by attending obedience classes and by learning all they can about appropriate behavior in dogs.
Secondly I recommend checking out the shelters and rescues. They can help match you with just the right dog for you.

I would recomend a yellow or black labrador, or maybe a golden retriever, but the lab might be a bit more active. Or you can get a dalmation. Search on the internet, and heres some websites you could try.

I think you should get a shih-tzu. they are medium sized and they will not grow any more unless they eat too much. They are very active, but if you buy it as a puppy You will have to train it to not poop or pee in the house. They are also very very very adorable
