The trouble with calling cards is that they tend to have different conditions.
The ones that claim the best price per minute have a hefty connect fee. Which is fine if you use your card to make just one or two very long calls, but crap if you want to make lots of shorter calls (or frequently reach answering machines).
So, which card to recommend depends on your usage pattern.
Also, you didn't say where you'd be calling from.

How about bypassing the calling card and instead calling for free using your regular home phone?

Try www.justvoip.com. It's a new service, whereby calls to certain countries are free, and you set up the call by visiting their web site, but the actual call is conducted on regular landline phones. Check it out below.
