He needs your consent until he is 18. In have a son in the paras who fought in the Iraq War and though I would never upset him by saying so, I am worried a lot of the time. I am really outraged at Gordon Brown for not providing enough resources to equip the forces properly. But this is what my son wanted to do. What you should do is go down to the nearest recruiting office and talk it over with the people there. I have found that they really are honest with parents in your position.

No, he can't. But even if he does join the army now, he won't see active service until he's 18. I joined when I was 15 ( about 100 years ago ).
If it's what your son really wants, then I think you should let him do it, it'll show you trust and respect his judgement. If he finds he doesn't like the life then he is free to leave any time before his 18th birthday.

He needs your consent until 18.
However, if he is determined what is the point of trying to prevent him, thus making him unhappy for 18 months? It could backfire on you if you refuse to support him.
He doesn't have to go into an Infantry role. Maybe he wants to be a cook or an engineer? There are so many great opportunities to be had in the British Armed Forces.
Why not visit the MOD website and see for yourself what he has to gain rather than what you might think he has to lose.

He has to have your comsent until he's 18. He can walk out in the first 6 weeks of training i think but after that he's in for a few years and has to give a years notice to leave.

The word attempts would decide the punishment. Probably for a first attempt, 90 days in the glass house. By the way JAKE if you are going to become an Officer you had better moderate your language, calling someone an idiot will make you very popular.(see one of the answers)

I can understand your worries but there are much worse things he could do like turn into a laybout and spend day on drugs!
Being a mother what ever he does you will worry but he will learn new skills and if it is what he wants then i would support him with it.
Good luck i wish you well

With your consent he can join.
But he will not be allowed to go into a combat unit before 18.
At 18 he can decide what he wants to do by himself.
