My 13 year old daughter has had the bars (silver squares) put on her teeth for braces today. Which foods is she not allowed to eat, and which foods can she eat?

Caramel, Gum, Marshmallows ( anything sitcky).

Nuts, tortilla chips, popcorn, hard breads( too crunchy)

lemons, limes ( anything high in acid has effect on glue)

Also any crunchy fruits/vegetables must be cut up in small pieces( ex. apples, celery)

Corn must be taken off cob

I eat hard candy but don't chew on it. There are a lot of things she can still eat the just has to be a lot more careful. I cut up most of my food into very small pieces. I still eat peanut butter.

For the next few days she will probably want to be mostly on a liquid/very soft food diet because it will be too painful. I drank ensure and ate mostly yougurt and applesauce for about a week.

I had braces (train tracks) on my teeth for all of last year (they came off last week!) so the rules are...

For the first 4-5 weeks, teeth feel delicate, so it's best to stay away from hard foods, and stick to things like custard and mashed potato! After that, when you get used to braces, you can eat pretty much anything except the obvious things that would damage them, like chewy sweets (toffees, caremels etc are all no good) whole apples (sliced are fine) and uncooked carrot batons. Common sense is usually all it takes, but there aren't many restrictions. Your orthodontist should tell you all you need to know.

Hope it helps!!

You are not allowed to eat anything that is very sticky (toffee, fudge, hard boiled sweets, chewing gum, those refresher stikcy bar things, anything that you really have to bite on)

Avoid nuts and steak (unless the steak is soft)

Its a pretty obvious answer if you think about it. Dont eat anything which looks too sticky or is hard and may break off the brackets.

(I was quite lucky, because i ate crisps, and fudge and i never had any problems. If she wants to eat hard bioled seets, then she can suck on them but dont chew them)

Its awkward chewwing gum or any really sticky, chewy sweet. The same with food but generally she will be ok.

It's also encouraging to know that when she is finished with the braces she will have beautiful/perfect teeth - much better than most of her friends who never had braces.

Your orthodontist should have give you a list, but my daughters says anything with ITO after it...such as Doritos, Cheetos, etc...no caramel, gum, popcorn, anything sticky or super hard.

Here's a list from an ortho....

Remind her the pain is the worst on the second day...after that she'll be better. A beautiful smile for LIFE is worth it. Good for you for taking such great care of her!!!

Hard gooey and sticky. All of those can damage the braces and cause correction visits.

Stay will softer cooked foods and small bites.

dont eat chewing gum, anything toohard, sticky or too chewy, the brackets are fixed with a strong luting agent so rarely come off , but the wire may occasionally displace, but a five minute appt with your dentist will put it back quite easily.

umm..actually youre not supposed to eat gum..unless your ortho. says you can which many of them dont!!
you cnt eat sticky foods:caramel, tootsie rolls, starburst, laffy taffy,mambas..you get the point..
really hard foods, peanuts, they recommend you not eat dorritos,or any chips that end with ito..but they dnt mind lays!!um snickers, anything in that cateragory...
they dnt really recommend you drink dark sodas like..coke,and dr.peeper or coffee because it could stain the teeth!!
