The thread of the Bible, leading up to Rev, is really talking about the great false religions of the World. Babylon, in the spiritual sense, is the "mystery religions", not of Christ, but posing as truth. It is telling us that these great false religions of the world, will fall.! In the end, only the truth, God's true way of life, will exist. Babylon the great will fall. If it's not truth and pure worship, then it's a lie, and God will let it destroy itself.

Revelations is a poem written by a man who despaired that Christ did not return to save Jerusalem from Roman destruction (70 AD?). Revelations is not a prophesy - per Catholic thinking. After Jesus ascended into heaven, the early Christians expected his quick return.
