My pet Maltese recently had rabies and other booster shot . 3 weeks later i noticed a lump the size of a half a golf ball at the vaccine site.
What can it be?
Do i observe it or does it need to be drained.
There is only one vet on our island and i doubt his competence

It's common to have a vaccination lump, but they are the size of a dime. The size of a "golf ball" is more unusual. Is it hot, red and infected? Would they have used a dirty needle that could have caused an infection? If so, you will have to get some antibiotics.

Out of my 7 dogs 3 lump up after shots, 1 still has a little bump after 2 yrs and the other has the lump after a year and the third loses his shot lump in a couple of months. It is just a tissue reaction and can happen with diff shots. 1) Vaccine site lump: the slowest and mildest reaction - rarely bothering the pet at all. A small mass or lump may be detected at the vaccine site from one day to three weeks after the vaccine is administered. In most cases, the lump will resolve in approximately the same time frame as it appears (a day to a few weeks). this particular type of allergic reaction is generally not associated with a progression to other forms of allergy to vaccines.

This happend to our cheewawa once... sorry cant spell it... our vet said it was because the vaccine got under the skin, not in the muscle where it was supposed to go... he said it was ok though... the body will absorb the vaccine, just may take a month or two... as long as it's not painful to the animal all is OK>...

this just happened to us this week. we are lucky to have a good vet. i called the nest morning to see what to do. we went out of town [ dogsitting for family] and could not drive back that day..
we were instructed to use childrens benedryl. liquid. but the dosage is according to the dogs weight.. two doses, lots of water and rest. and a couple days, and it went down...

but check with vet to be safe. even if he is not the best, it is the only thing available at the moment...

It is perfectly normal to have a lump at the site of injection. This lump can remain for several weeks.

Get it checked from the Vet because a rabie can cause cancer. There are two different kinds of rabie shots and one of them can cause cancer. Please have it checked.
