For that money I'd buy a Ka, unless you really need the 5-doors of the Daewoo Matiz - or fall for its styling.
The Ka has better ride and handling, has fewer niggling problems, and if it does go wrong parts are cheap, readily available and any decent garage can fix it.
The Matiz was a decent car, but parts have to be shipped from Korea making them more expensive, and there are fewer mechanics that know their way around one.

People say stay away from Daewoos and Ka's.
I personally don't see a problem with them, they are great for a first drivers car.
Daewoo Matiz is probably best for you, yes, they are pretty slow, and have a little granny look about them! But they will do what you need them for.
Some of the bad points on KAs are that they can get very rusty especially pre 2001.
But, they are so cheap, I was watching one on eBay, a 53 reg that went for just under £2300.
Have you thought about Fiat Seicento and Fiat Punto ?
You can read car reviews on www.parkers.co.uk and also see what insurance group the cars are. Insurance is likely to cost between £1000 and well up to anything really!
Good Luck

The fomer korean car maker should give alot better value I wouldnt say no but it would have to be cheap because when you come to sell it no one is going to want it, on the other hand there is always a good market for Fords of any age, parts are easy to get & fairly cheap & any garage can fix them.
The ka still looks good in my opinion despite the design being a decade old the engine used is an old design so not fast & hi tech car but the advantage is nothing much goes wrong with them, check out surveys by Which, JD Power etc they are the most reliable Ford ever only prone to the odd problem with suspension.
I did this research before buying my Ka 2 years ago, apart from new brake pads its needed a new suspenion bush, the paint work isnt as good as you get on a VW for e.g but for the money low insurance etc its still the one Id recommend.

as far as i am lead to believe, daewoo`s are vauxhalls underneath, so they are cheap in terms of insurance and repairs, as for ka`s they are knocking on the doors of the scrap yards already! i have seen 03 and 53 plates with a lot of rust round the filler cap etc, be very aware
i personaly would choose a slightly older VW

daewoo is very old vauxhall technology disguised as a new product. leave it alone.
I have drove a Ka when i had one as a hire car. Handles like a little go kart. quite fun. rubbish on petrol if its a 1.2
NIce cheap available parts.. and any garage can fix them. look quite modern too.

My personal experience of Ka's is that they are fun, economical, and pretty nippy really and if you can fit everything in, they can't really be beat. I've two kids now, so its not altogether practical, but I would love to own one again.

They're both junk, but that's balanced out by there low low price. Try to find one that still has some factory warranty left on it's powertrain and take care of it as best as you can.
