All influenzas (flus) were originally bird flus that mutated to become easily transmissible to other animals, like humans. (The technical term is that birds are the natural reservoirs for influenza) In wild birds, flu does not cause disease. But, when wild birds infect domestic birds, like chickens and turkeys, these birds can become sick and die. Bird flu can kill an entire flock of domestic birds very quickly. Humans can contract bird flu if they work or live with infected birds. In most cases, people die from the bird flu.

There are numerous strains of flu virus and they are mutating all of the time. The biggest danger of bird flu is for it to mutate enough that humans can contract it and pass it from one human to another. Since the strain of bird flu is completely new, people don't have antibodies to fight the new flu and a lot of people would die. Once that happens the flu would first become an epidemic (major outbreak) in the area where it started and then quickly become a pandemic (global epidemic).

So you see, the bird flu has the potential to result in worldwide death in people, like the Spanish flu in 1918. The so called "human flu" is actually referred to as seasonal flu and is usually preventable by vaccination since these flus are circulating strains and not completely new.
