Why did Muhammad take the top pagan god of the Kabah in Mecca (called Hubal and/or Allah) and chose it to be his monotheistic god? What Muslims refer to today as "Allah"?

Hubal was the chief idol of Mecca but pagan Meccans never called Hubal as Allah. Even during the war, the Meccans call themselves the followers of Hubal while Muslims are followers of Allah. In the battle of Uhud:

When Abu Sufyan wanted to leave he went to the top of the mountain and shouted loudly saying, "You have done a fine work; victory in war goes by turns. Today in exchange for the day (of Badr). Show your superiority, Hubal," i.e. vindicate your religion. The apostle told ‘Umar to get up and answer him and say, God [Allah] is most high and most glorious. We are not equal. Our dead are in paradise; your dead are in hell. (Ibn Hisham)

According to Ibn al-Kalbi's Book of Idols,

"In 624 at the battle called 'Uhud', the war cry of the Qurayshites was, 'O people of Uzzā', people of Hubal!' By the end of that war, the victorious Abū Sufyān ibn-Harb cried, 'O Hubal be exalted, O Hubal be exalted!'"
"The Prophet answered him: 'God is the highest and the most exalted.'"

Hi, Sara,

Muhammad indeed selected a single god from the polytheist Kabah of Arabia, and as conqueror, elevated this god in a new monotheistic faith as "Allah" (Arabic for god). He and his followers soon imposed theocratic rule from Spain to India by military conquest.

Why did Muhammad invent a new faith? Of course, he was right that polytheism is false and superstitious. But he lived 700 years after Christ, and he knew about the real God, who commands that we have no other god before him. Bowing to the true God of Judaism and Christianity would not make Muhammad's fortune; with repentance before the true God, Muhammad would have become a servant of God and a humble man. Instead, Muhammad wanted the great power and riches showered upon him as the prophet of a new faith.

As the prophet of Allah, Muhammad could command people to do what he wanted and conveniently have Allah back him up. A good example is when he wanted to add his adopted son's wife, Zaynab, to his harem, though Allah had previously forbidden divorce. He simply had Allah, his personal god, issue a new order, permitting divorce just for him.

Muslims should learn more about the man they call prophet--a polygamist, a child abuser with a "wife" Aisha just 9 years old, a slaver, a lawmaker who demanded cutting off the hands of minor thieves, and a cruel conqueror who carried out a terrible massacre of all the Jewish men at Qurayzah. He was simply an Arabian warlord that forced his invented faith on a large part of the world. I pray that Muslims have the courage to risk apostasy from Islam and faith in the real God.

Cheers,
Bruce

You are so right to ask a question like this.
But don't be surprised if all the one eyed closed minded idiots who want to kill anything that is not Muslim, supported by their politically correct church ministers who continually say that Islam is a peaceful religion gang up on you.

I know because I asked a few similar questions about the obvious glaring contradictions in their stupid bloodthirsty religion of death,,,, and the same old Islamic brigade come out and parrot the old stupid cliches'.

Their God is not the God of the Bible. Their God is not the god of Abraham. Abraham left all those gods back in Ur of the Chaldees, and God revealed himself to Abraham and his name to Abraham as Yahweh.

There is a man, who was a former Palestinian terrorist called Walid Shoebat. He read the old testament to disprove the Bible and ended up finding out that he was on the wrong side.

He has a website. See below. He is a very educated man, and confirms all you say here. He has been persecuted by his countrymen. He was forbidden to enter Canada because the Muslims lobbied the Govt and won. Yet they welcomed that other killer, Yasser Arafat with open arms.

If the average Muslim knew how that had been deceived by their mindless religion, they would tear down every mosque and build a church.

I'll answer you and clarify some of the points since you didn't get them correctly:

1 - Hubal is an idol used to be worshiped by the people of Arabia, Muslims destroyed it.

2 - Allah is the arabic name of God.
I believe Jesus spoke Aramaic. So, go check what the translation of God in Aramaic. I'll save you time, the translation of God in the language Jesus spoke is Allaaaha.

3 - There is was no Idol called Allah in Arabia.

4 - Kabah is a sacred place built by Abraham, the father of all religions. Thats why it is sacred in Islam. Also, the pagans knew this face and placed their Idols there.

The Kabah is not Allah. It was the site where Allah first spoke to man. That man was Abraham.

History of Kaaba:-------------------------------

The Kaaba was built five times. The first time, it was built by the Angels before prophet Adam (peace be upon him). It was made out of ruby. Then, the structure was raised to the sky during the time of the flood. 2-The second time it was built by prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him). 3-The third time, the Quraish tribe built it during the Jahiliyyah time at Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was present at that time. 4-The fourth time, Abdullah Ibn al-Zubayr built it. 5- And the 5th time, it was the Hajaj who built the structure that we know today. As to the black stone, it is said that it is from Heaven but it turned black due to the sins of the believers. Muslims turn towards the Kaaba as an obedience to God. This is mentioned in several parts of the Qur'an such as in Surah al-Baqarah (2) verses 144, 149, and 150

The Kaaba has four Rukn (or corners). They are: 1-The Black Corner (Rukn al-Aswad) where the black stone is, 2-The Yemeni Corner (Rukn al-Yamani), 3-The Shami Corner (Damascus), and 4-The Iraqi Corner. The first two corners (Black and Yemeni) are commonly known as the Yamanyyan (the two Yemenis) and the last two corners are known as the Shamiyyan (the two Shami). The first two were built on the pillars of prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) while the other two were not. The Black corner has two values: 1-it contains the black stone and 2-it is built on the pillars of prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) , as to the Yemeni Corner, it has one value which is the fact that it was built on the pillar of prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him). As to the other two corners, they don't have any specific value

The Black Stone in the Kaaba is relatively small. While we don't know off-hand its actual size, it is oval-shaped of the size of the palms of the hand.

The real reason why Muslims kiss the Black Stone is to behave like prophet Muhammad (pbuh) did. However, this doesn't prevent us from trying to understand the possible reasons behind the act itself because every human being, by nature, desires to understand the wisdom behind his/her actions. As you know, the tradition among the Arab people was to shake hands when they reached an agreement among each other. This was a sign of trust, truthfulness, and sincerity. Therefore, when a Muslim touches or kisses the Black Stone that God has brought from Heaven, then it is a symbolic gesture that the Muslim is pledging to God his/her total submission and obedience. This is especially important since God is not tangible. (Source www.islam.org)

No Muslim ever worships the Kaba – It is a misconception among the Non-Muslims, that we Muslims, we worship the Kabah. No Muslim worships the Kabah – we only worship Allah (swt), Who we cannot see in this world. What we do is, the Kabah is the Qibla – Qibla in Arabic means ‘The direction.’ Kabah is the Qibla, because we Muslims – We believe in unity, always unity. For example, if we want to pray to Almighty God... Allah (swt) – If we have to offer Salaah, some may say... ‘Let us face the North ; some may say...‘Let us face South’ ; some may say...‘East’ ; some say...‘West’. Where do we face? We believe in unity – So for unity, all the Muslims throughout the world, they are asked to face in the direction of the Qibla, that...is the Kabah – it is our direction – We do not worship it. And the first people who drew the world map, were the Muslims – and when the Muslims drew the world map, they drew with the South pole on top, and North pole down – and Kabah was in the center. The Westerners came and they turned the map upside down – North pole on top, South pole down. Alhamdulillah, yet the Kabah is in the center – Mecca is in the center. And since Mecca is in the center, any Muslim in any part of the world – if he is staying in North of Kabah, he faces towards the South; If he is staying in the South of Kabah, he faces towards the North. All the Muslims throughout the world, they face in one direction. Kabah is the Qibla… it is the direction – No Muslim ever worships it – No Muslim ever worships it. And when we go for Haj… to the pilgrimage, we circumambulate round the Kabah. We circumambulate around the Kabah, because everyone knows, that all circles have only one center – So we circumambulate round the Kabah, to testify that there is only one God – not because we worship it. And the statement of the second Khalifa of Islam, Hazrat Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, he said – it is mentioned in Sahih Muslim, in the book of Haj, Volume No. 2 – he said, Hazrat Umar may Allah be pleased with him, that... ‘I am kissing the black stone, that is the Kabah... Sange Aswad, only because my Prophet kissed it – otherwise this black stone can neither harm me, neither can it benefit me’. The second Khalifa of Islam... Caliph of Islam, Hazrat Umar, may Allah be pleased with him – he made it clear for eternity, that no Muslim ever worships the black stone – it can neither benefits us, neither can it harm us. And the best example is that, during the time of the Prophet – the Sahabas... the companions of the Prophet, they even stood on the Kabah, and gave the Adhan – Adhan is the call for prayers. People stood on the Kabah, and gave the Adhan. I am asking you...‘Which idol worshipper, will ever stand on the idol he worships.’So these are sufficient proofs, that no Muslim ever worships the Kabah. Kabah is the Qibla – and we worship only Allah (swt), (Source www.irf.net)
