I'm Catholic, but hardly know anything about my religion. Is Jesus and God the same person? Who am I supposed to pray to?

I didn't want to explain my beliefs, but I guess I'm going to have to. I believe in God, for so many reasons, I don't have the time to explain them right now. Don't answer my question if you're not going to take me seriously or if you're against my beliefs.

At this moment I'm simply confused. Again don't question what I believe in. I know who God and Jesus are, but now people have told me they're the same person and I don't know what to believe.
Please don't make me more confused than I already am.

I now dislike this category. It's filled with rude people.

You address God, but send your prayer through Jesus. Like at the end of your prayer just say, "through Jesus Christ Amen".

When we pray to God, we are also praying to Christ and the Holy Spirit.
If you don't know much about your faith, you are asking about it at just the right time. RCIA classes are about to start. They're not just for inquirers or potential converts, you know; many Catholics like to sit in on a few RCIA classes to "brush up" on things they aren't clear about. If your parish doesn't have RCIA, then certainly a neighboring parish will. They usually meet one evening a week. If you ask the RCIA coordinator for a class outline, then you'll know which sessions you'd like to attend based on the subject matter. Oh, and they're free.
An alternative for learning more about your faith is a really excellent series from the Catholic Home Study Service which offers free correspondence courses with books. There are eight, but if you read just one -- "We Believe: A Survey of the Catholic Faith" is a good place to start, but you may see others you'd prefer -- you'll know much more than you do now. Link is below.
I wouldn't use this forum as your only source for reliable information about your faith. As you have discovered, it is open to anyone with an opinion.

Hiya , Great question !! :-)
Jesus is Gods only begotten son , and he prayed to his father that was in the heavens.
So we should likewise too pray to the great creator of all things , God.
Some people confuse who God and Jesus actually are.
They might say that Jesus is God but in mans form ,or that there is a third person called holy spirit.
Additionally some say Mary or the saints should be prayed to.
But the Bible is very clear on the subject that it is God alone that listens to our prayers and who is the only one to be worshiped.
For more information plz feel free to email me.

Jesus is the Son of God - praying to Him is praying to God. As St. Patrick taught the Irish about the Holy Trinity, think of a 3-leaf clover - 3 petals, but all the same plant. It is the same with God - He is the Father, Son (Jesus), and Spirit.
As Catholics, we only pray to God (one of the three). We frequently will ask the saints to pray for us on our behalf - we do not pray to the saints. The Blessed Virgin Mary is the most perfect saint of all!

I am a cradle Catholic. Went to Catholic church until about 10 yrs ago and I'm mid-50's. There are 3 persons in the Trinity---Father, Son & Holy Spirit. They are 3 distinct persons but all one God. So you pray to any or all of them. Jesus intercedes for us. The Holy Spirit gives us wisdom and boldness in speaking the Truth to non-believers (or confused believers, for that matter). The Father is a kind, all-knowing, all gracious God, who loves us all very much. But He chastises us when we need it. And He disciplines us when we don't listen to what He says or don't follow His commandments. I go to several churches now, but feel like once-a- Catholic-always-a-Catholic.
Hope this helps you in your search for God.
God bless..............

You are supposed to pray to God. You are correct in saying they are not the same. Look into the bible Read where Jesus says to prayt to God through him That's found a John 15:16. This scripture is actually two fold purpose to you. It helps us to see that you pray to God through Jesus,(in Jesus name I pray) and that God and Jesus cant be the same.

I don't plan to be rude but I will try to answer your questions, 1.Is Jesus and God the same person?Well many people think so, but what do Jesus and God say about that?(John10:36 ; Matthew316,17)2. Who are we supposed to pray to?In the model prayer in (Matthew6:9) did Jesus tell his followers to pray to him or to God?he directed his prayers to his Father, and he also told his followers to pray to his Father also, so, then, we should pray to God in Jesus name to acknowledge the sacrifice that Jesus made for us, but we should pray only to God. I hope that helps May God bless your efforts to understand his truth.

Pray to God. Jesus is the Son of God. And no, Jesus and God are not the same person.

Jesus is God. He is God the Son and the second person of the trinity, with God the Father being the first person and the Holy Spirit being the third person. They are one God and are coequal. "I and the Father are one" - John 10:30

I know you are confused! Just do what Jesus did and what he instructed us to do. When praying to God he addressed Him as "Our Father". Since the Bible says that no one can come to the Father unless he come through the Son. Pray your prayer to God and end it in Jesus name. May the Lord bless you!
