I have just recently found out that a neighbor had syphilis. Can you help me with some questions??? Hypothetically if my neighbor used the bathroom and did not wash his hands could it be spread that way? Or if someone used his toilet? Basically could it be be spread in any non-sexual way? Thank you so much for anyone who answers my question on posts a good link! I am sorry for my lack of education in the STD department!

Syphilis can be transmitted only by sexual contact or through rare circumstances (e.g. open-wound to open-wound contact, hospital negligence of using HIV-contaminated syringes to patients, etc). Kissing a person with syphilis won't even cause you to be contaminated with the disease. Don't fret unless you have had a sexual intercourse with the person.

Google: "Justin Bieber Syphilis" and the news article should come up. If not, try it ten more times and it should appear, with images also.

Exchange of body fluids is the only way-in other words, just like HIV-unsafe sex, share a needle.
Syphilis is curable though.
