If the blood is red and looks 'fresh' it is likely to be piles (haemorrhoids) or it could be a fissure. This is a small tear that comes usually after a passing a hard stool. Piles are often very itchy and can be very painful. A fissure usually gives so much pain that you will do almost anything not to pass a stool. As others have said there could be other more serious causes but the bad things are always more unlikely (though possible). Fresh blood tends to indicate the bleeding is lower in the gasto intestinal tract i.e rectum or anus. A GP or general physician could daignose piles or fissure very easily and over the counter remedies are effective.
Trauma to the anus or rectum could also cause frank bleeding. Don't know if that is likely?
Old blood or black distinct smelling stool (not if you are on Iron) is usually a cause for concern as it tends to indicate bleeding higher in the digestive tract and should always be investigated further.
I hope it's something simple and easily sorted.

There are many different things that could be causing the bleeding.
Has your partner ever suffered with piles?
Piles do not necessarily have to be on the outside, it is very common to have them inside.
Piles can be caused by straining whilst using the toilet,as well as a low fibre diet.
In all cases you should book an appointment with your GP
as it could be a number of ailments.
If his urine also contains blood get a check up straight away.
Its more then likely piles but go for a check up to get assurance.

Hemorrhoids, also known as piles are swollen veins around the anal opening or the anal canal. They can be painful and linger on for a long time causing distress. Fortunately, there are a number of home remedies that are as effective and provides fast relief https://tr.im/nPHYV
The main symptoms include bleeding during the bowel movement and itching. The first thing that people do to cure hemorrhoids is get an OTC medication, without knowing their possible side effects.

Blood in the stool (Hematochezia) - the passage of red, or maroon- colored stools. Red or "frank" blood in the stool could be caused by hemorrhoids. Bloody stools can also be seen in amebiasis, anal fissures, or colorectal cancer. Bright red bleeding with bowel movements may be due to hemorrhoids; however, other conditions such as colonic polyps or tumors, diverticulosis, and abnormal small vessels called AVMs also may cause bleeding. Frequent diarrhea can also cause bleeding due to irritation of the intestinal lining.
On occasions; the bleeding is coming from the upper intestine or stomach. Bleeding is usually is evaluated by colonoscopy. Blood, as seen in the stool, can originate anywhere along the intestinal tract. A black stool usually means that the blood is coming from the upper part of the GI tract. At least 6 Tablespoons (or 200 milliliters) of blood must have been lost in order to cause passage of melena.
Maroon-colored stools or bright red blood usually suggest that the blood is coming from large bowel or rectum. However, sometimes can be caused by massive upper GI tract bleeding. Some upper GI causes of bloody stools can also cause vomiting blood such as in peptic ulcer disease. The color of the stool can suggest the location of the bleeding however this is not reliable. A definitive diagnosis will require radiographic and/or endoscopic investigation.
Black color –
- bleeding ulcer
- gastritis
- esophageal varices
- a tear in the esophagus from violent vomiting
Maroon color –
- all the causes of black color stool
- diverticular bleeding
- vascular malformation
- intestinal infection (such as bacterial enterocolitis)
- inflammatory bowel disease
- tumor
- colon polyps or colon cancer
Bright red color -
- all the causes of black or maroon color stool
- hemorrhoids
- anal fissures ("cracks" in the anal area)

If the blood is fresh (bright red) it is probably from haemorrhoid's (piles) or small tears in the anus.
If the blood is is darker (black, brown or like tea leaves) he needs to go to the hospital straight away as this is from the stomach or bowel and could be very serious!

It's possibly piles (Haemorrhoid's) but quite frankly if it's bad he should have them looked at by a doctor who can rule out any serious causes like cancer, any bleeding from the bowel areas should be treated. Get him there as soon as possible. I talk from experience, both myself and my partner.

If it continues he must see a GP, this could be a sign of internal bleeding, eg from colonic cancer, or passing stools after a period of constipation

you are meant to go see the doctor for any type of rectal bleeding because although it can be something simple (but annoying) like haemorroids, it could also be something serious that early treatment is essentail for. MAKE him go. good luck. peacex
