I'd really like to work from home, doing some of the things i've seen advertised...such as mailing information, assembling products, any kind of data entry, but not spamming. I'm scared though because I don't want to be scammed or tricked into something.

The assemble at home scams work something like this-You pay a large amount of money for craft supplies and receive them with a set of instructions of how to assemble items at home. You follow them to the letter and pay a huge amount to ship the items back to the people you bought the overpriced craft supplies from in the first place only to be told most of your items are not up to their standards and they made most of their profit selling you overpriced craft supplies in the first place. You receive a small check for items they accepted just enough to keep the police out of the matter. Mail at home scams work much the same way. They make you pay for the mailers and envelopes you are sending out for them and you supposedly receive a percentage of sales resulting from these mailings. The one thing I have heard of that might be legitimate is the work from home processing medical claims for doctors offices. That requires training which also costs money and where does your medical insurance come from?

Yeah, the best work from home scheme is one where you recruite people to work from home recruiting people to work from home.

There are plenty of real jobs, but they will be advertised through regular ways (not through spam, postage stamp size ads in the paper or stuck on telegraph poles).

One example of a work from home job is one where you answer calls for 1900 numbers (including psychic hotlines, home tutoring and phone sex).

They're all b.s. and I'll tell you why: They all ask you for money. Just like with these modeling agencies and talent scouts...they ask you to pay something...If I'm working for you then you should be paying me. All the start-up costs and fees should just be taken out of your first check...but they never do it like that...that would be too much like right. DON'T fall for the scam. I used to pay attention to them, but they pretty much want to sell you some useless infomercial style dvd with all these testimonials of people who claim to have made so much money, but they never tell you what they did to make the money. It's usually some impossible sales junk...Don't fall for it!

I have been asking myself this question for years and i have been burnt. Be very careful. I wouldn't recommend this. you would rather use conventional methods.
