generally tattoos are transferred as a stencil for the artist to follow so you can see the general concept of it first on your skin and make any changes as far as placement goes. some artists will freehand draw a tattoo on your skin before tattooing but i have never heard of an artist just tattooing on blank skin with no reference markings to start with.

There are two ways to do it,
Either the artist will sketch it out and put a print of it on you or they will print off something for a PC and show you...
Either way you will have a little preview of what it will look like..

For detailed work, please make sure that the artist shows you at least a sketch so that you will know what it looks like. If OK with you, he will then stencil it onto your skin. For the other less detailed stuff, he may do freehand, but will normally still draw the basic outline on your skin.

Depends on the tattoo....if you select one of the "flash" designs then no....the tattoo artist will take it...size it for where it is going on you.....transfer it to your skin using something akin to carbon paper. If you want original art then yes...the tattoo artist will sketch up the design...get your approval....transfer it....etc.

you should be shown the design on paper first and then most but not all artists will do an outline on the skin

Most of them wont draw right on you, you bring in what you want, they touch it up on paper, then copy it onto a carbon copy, then put that on your arm w/ water and vasoline. It depends, if you get the crap they have hanging or bring in your own work, theyll copy it. If you tell them to run w/ it, they might draw on you.

yes...they put it on something that looks similar to wax paper...they wet the wax paper and stick it on you...this way its gives the artist an outline to follow and you can tell if you like it there or somewhere else.
