People with Asperger's have difficulty with empathy and don't understand how other people work. They can seem geeky or clueless. If you google Wired Magazine and "Geek Syndrome" there's a really good article and a test to see if someone has it. However, in my experience, people with Asperger's can end up being really successful, so it's got some pluses to it.

Aspergers is an Autism Spectrum Disorder. "Rain Man" was at the savant stage of autism. The nature of any autism spectrum disorder is hard to pinpoint, as there are so many variations on the disorder. Mostly, it's an inability to empathise, and to socialise. Many children with an asd have difficulty making eye contact, don't really like to be touched (although there are many exceptions to this), and have mild obsessive compulsive routines. They tend to prefer routine, and don't like to have any of their routines broken or interfeared with. They can appear to be slow or have difficulty learning and concentrating. This isn't usually because of a lack of intelligence, but a lack of ability to interact. Really the best way to find out is to have him assessed by a behavioural expert. Many kids with asd benefit from adhd medication. One of the most difficult things is that they can become very aggressive when things aren't exactly how they think they should be. Handled properly by parents and the community, most of them are very sweet children. But still, best to see the experts, as many other things fit the same 'symptoms'.

I know a girl with it and for the most part, they are pretty normal, but they don't seem to understand how they come across to others. they have alot of problems with social situations, they get anxious etc. they can be unaware that they're being rude or why people responded unfriendly to them. they can be excessive in their responses when it is uncalled for, eg. yelling, too much laughing etc. this is just my experience though so take it with a grain of salt
