the people who say it's a rite or ritual performed during the appointment of a new ruler aren't incorrect, but anointing started out as something shepherds did for their sheep. a special kind of oil was put into a sheep's ear, in order to keep insects out, and thus keep the animal healthy (if you've ever had a cat with ear mites, this is a comparable practice). so, when we say that Jesus is anointed (''Messiah'' and "Christ'' both mean ''Anointed One''), it means not only that He was not only anointed with the Holy Spirit to keep Him free of sin (disease), but also that He was anointed to be our King. read 2 timothy 2:12- ''... we will also reign with Him.'' upon being born again, a person is anointed with the Holy Spirit, and is given the authority that adam and eve turned over to satan in the garden. in that sense, we are made kings. when people refer to Jesus as the ''King of kings,'' that means He is the King of believers, and that we have been given that title, authority, and priviledge by God.

It was usually done by pouring oil on a persons head during an official ceremony.

Christ or Messiah means the anointed. Though there were many such, there is only one primary one of God, Jesus Christ.

THat is when God will give you extra strenth and power to do something for Him, Its so much more tho, this is a word that is hard to explain to someone who has not yet felt it. Its being in His total presence and feeling noone or nothing else but Him and His wonderous love. so many things. Its like special favor givien to you to keep you living and walking in the SPirit of the living God Example, when you go to church and you feel a corporate annointing, that when the church is coming together in unity , sooo many of them that the Spirit is allowed to flow freely there, ppl will be so in Gos prsence, and much revelation and power comes then to those that receive this corporate annointing. meaning more than one at the same time are receiving this. Prophecies come during this time and are given. Its simply the power of God coming all over you and giving you the special favor to do His will and to receive and KNOW more things. Have you ever been in prayer, deep prayer with God and felt that you were in a state of total peace and surrounded by His glory and love, that is annoiting. Did you ever have a situation troubleingyou and you pray and pray and one day answers come and you are so in the presence of God, that when the anwers come , you feel only His perfect presence? Thats annointing. Without going into some christanese, that few understand, I wanted to try to explain this, and I dont know if I am doing it correctly, but I will only point you to God, the source of all answers, to take you deeper into this subject. Once you experience it , you know.
Lets say I dont know where God is calling me or what my specific gifts are that He gave me and wants me to use.. WEll one day I am talking to God and HE says to me, YOUR GIFT IS.............. AnD here is how I want you to use it. Thats direct from God, and He has given me special annointing in that gift, so when I use the gift I will be effective for God. annointing will come the more ppl love God and are willing to serve and follow Jesus, not just claim to be christian. WOrds mean nothing to God without action behind it.
I want to be in Gods annointing and favor all the time, Him blessing all that I do. and to tell the world that they should ask God for themselves how to stay in this annointing with the Holy Spirit. conviction... confirmation, and a passion to live only for Jesus Chrsit
WE should all ask GOd what our gifts really are and how to use them to bring Him full glory.
