After reading all of the other answers here, I believe we all have different opinions on the meaning of the word "religous". But that's not what you were asking, now is it? You used this word in this phrase to mean, "Why do you follow the beliefs that you follow?" So, that is what I will respond to.

I am a Christian. I know 100% that God has always been and always will be (something that beings such as ourselves can't comprehend since we have a beginning and an end in these earthly bodies), I know that the Virgin Mary concieved and bore the Son of God, Jesus Christ.

I know it's true because I can feel it in my heart. Religion asks us to be blind, and follow without proof. So, yes, in a way, I am blind, but I trust in my Lord and Savior to lead the way. Why would I need my eyes when I have Jesus, who will never let me down, never decieve me, and never leave me wandering through a dark world alone? That is what Christianity is, believing without seeing.

Just as a blind man can live like a sighted person, so can we live if we have a helping hand to guide us.

I believe because my entire life I wanted to know if there was "something" out there - someone or something that made me, that was running the show, that had a plan... I read so many "holy" books - the Qur'an, Eastern philosophies, TM, Paganism I tried so many things and each time I felt emptiness... I never connected with "whatever" was out there so I concluded that either there was nothing out there or whatever it was didn't want to contact me...

Then when I got to college I read the Gospels in the New Testament for the first time in my life. I met some friends who followed Jesus and they told me what a difference knowing him made in their lives.

I didn't really understand what they were saying or who Jesus was, but I was intrigued and I learned more and more. Finally I became convinced and I asked Jesus if he was really the plan that God had for my life, I asked him to be the Lord of my life. I have followed him ever since and I can tell you that through Jesus I know God. I am connected to him. He lives in me. He has changed my life and I am whole now.

My family did not believe, I have shared with them about Jesus and sometimes they listen. Am I blind? No I think I see more clearly now than I did before.

"Amazing grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now I'm found, was blind, but now I see"

Why do I believe? A Creator is the only logical answer.
Basic science rules state that nothing can come from nothing.

My beliefs are based on sound, basic scientific laws.

The trully blind are those that think they are smarter then God.
That somehow mankind has gained enough information to disprove God.

I believe cause to me it just feels right. Im not gonna try and prove my faith. I'm not gonna compare science and faith. (though I admit its hard sometimes not to) but science is just a bunch of theories. Theories aren't really facts either. They are accepted as facts becuase noone can prove them wrong yet. If they can be proven wrong one day, then they will. If I'm wrong about my faith, no harm done. To me it's nothing to get worked up about. If my believes are right then when I die, my real life will begin and last forever. If I'm wrong, I'll be dead and not know the difference.

But yeah I was brought up in Christian household. (sorta) We went to church and stuff and I believed it all. When I got older, I started questioning my beliefs and eventualy lost my faith. I can't really explain it but I felt empty inside. After alot of thought, I started praying and felt full again. I know it sounds ridiculous to someone who isnt a believer and they will probably have some brain chemical release answer as to why I felt that way. As far as Im concerned though, it was God. And if I did have some weird chemical released from my brain that got rid of the emptyness I felt, then maybe God released it. ya know what I mean? I cant prove or disprove anything, not really. I might could to some but not to all. For me anyway, it just feels right.

I am religious because there is a lot of grey in this world. To identify this grey as white or black, you need religion.

People think differently around the world, the only way to know universal right or wrong is through religion.

People will say there is universal white and universal black. I don't think so.

For example, in parts of India they burn the wife alive with her dead husband, because there is no need for her to live anymore.

I believe that religion is universal law, and thats why I am religious.

I am a Taoist, although a rather poor example of one tonight with my back-handed remarks........I tried all of the abrahmic religions, and they just didn't make sense to me or appeal to me. Paganism was interesting, but the faith of that religion was just weird to me. I started to study Buddhism, but excessive pacificism is just flawed in my opinion, so I found the Tao Te Ching written by Lao Tzu, and it cemented itself in my heart, mind, and body as the best possible scource for spirtual enlightment I have ever read. I cannot recommend this tome highly enough, it is a deep dose of common sense and moral guidance that is very true to everyone still to this day.

I don't know if I am very religious, I have doubted my religion a lot, but I know that I am a spiritual being, that there is something in me which will never be satisfied by worldly possession. I am trying to reconcile this side now and I hope I will have more faith in the future.

money brought lots of cool stuff and a measure of happiness, sure. i was very popular and liked trolling forguys. i was one hot chickie.....still i am well known and many would like my life. i have a good job in education and am well thought of.

but now i am truly content. even through illness or strife, i have peace. i've never been happier. i don't bring guys home anymore.(i'mmarried) and i've given up many fleshly pleasures. i didn't even know i wasn't happy. i really like myself now and have a grand hope for the future.

my biggest regret is that i've set a terrible example for my daughter. she sees my former ways as glamorous and is following in those footsteps. i hope she can get it together before she gets eaten up by this world.

The goddess is all around us, in the air we breathe, the water we drink, in the skies, the oceans, in the mountains and forests. How can you look upon the magesty that is Gaia and not believe in her?
