here is my take on it: the system is going to require that employers (after hiring someone) via snail mail send in their data to them, and, then, the government will send back whether or not the numbers/names correspond.
Then, if the paper says that it DOES NOT match, the employer has 3 months to allow the employee to figure it out.....
So, presumably, it would take atleast 2 months for the first part, 3 months for the second.... 5 months total.... I think the undocumented will be "switching" jobs every 5-6 months... IF they work at restaurant A, once they are fired, they will apply at restaurant B, 5 months later they will be at restaurant C....
I doubt they are going to just "oh, ok. We'll go home." no, they will stay and work.....
This bill is on temporary hold, by the way.....

sometimes by default, but not always. I can think of an example I saw just this week. And while it seems like a pleasurable job, it isn't quite what it seems. My daughter and I went camping and whitewater rafting this past week. We wound up sharing dinner and talking with several of the whitewater rafting guides, after our trip. There were two guides from New Zealand and the rest were American citizens. They are paid $6-7 per hour and work hard all day every day. Each day they run the river which is either 14 miles or 21 miles (as in our case). In addition to having extensive rescue and river guide training, they must also work the camp. This means meeting and greeting people, setting up tents and tearing them down. Cooking and cleaning and many other camp-related jobs. They're provided meals (the same thing just about every day and with a tent. They joked about being "tent trailer trash - a step below trailer trash" but we saw where they lived. These are fairly educated people - one girl has a master's degree in kinesiology. I was very surprised at how hard I saw them working when and especially so when I learned how much they actually made. I don't know what their American counterparts made but for the amount of work, it seems to be unfair.

Many illegal immigrants avoid this issue by working and being paid under the table. Not only does this allow them to work without being granted citizenship, it also allows employers to be able to hire workers at lower cost to them.
As for illegal immigrants putting money into social security by using someone else's SS number, I don't believe that it is possible due to the way taxes and social security are handled. If this was happening, there would be people paying the IRS for money they have never seen, and in return, would cause a big uproar that would have risen many years ago.

It will be interesting to see what happens in Arizona and California, We have a very small unemployed job force and will not have enough workers to fill the positions. It will prove that American Employers will not increase wages and move out of the country. The Social security numbers sale (er) will change there operation to legal Social Security numbers ,that will match SSA data .

No, they would have to create better working conditions, competitive wages and benefits to make legal citizens want to work there. Basically, less money for managers and owners, more for the people doing the hard labor.
They are suppose to check but some employers don't. Restaurants, contractors, manufacturers just require a SSN but don't do the background check. They just want the number. If they are using a a fake SSN, many of them just get paid by cash only not check so it isn't run by the IRS and found to be a fake and inquiry begins. The employer can take out taxes but it doesn't usually make it to where its suppose to go. If it is a real but stolen SSN, it depends on what the worker put on his form. If you can get creative on what you out down you can actually pay little in taxes.
And would you feel comfortable knowing that an illegal worker could be using your SSN to work?

Using a stolen social security number is a felony, in every state, in every city, in every job. It is a federal crime.
Misuse of someone else's SSN is a violation of Federal law and may lead to fines and/or imprisonment.
You can not "make up" a social security number, that is a felony,
You can not use someone elses social security number, that is a felony.
You can not use a social security number which you "buy" from someone, that is a felony.
You can not use a social security number which belongs to any other person, any relative (including your child) , or any friend, that is a felony.
You cannot get a social security number from your employer, that is a felony.
You can not lie about your immigration status to get a social security number, that is a felony.
You can not tell any untruths, or give any false information, including false name, false ID, false place of birth, false birth certificate, or make any other fraudulent statements to get a social security number, that is a felony.
Any such social security number, fraudulently used and or obtained is considered a "stolen" social security number.
The penalty for using any such stolen number is a prison sentence of 25 years and a fine of $250,000.00.
Illegal alien who commit that felony are deported as a felon.
The USA does not allow any sort of entry to any foreign national who has been deported with a felony, for the rest of their life.
No visa.
No immigration.
No legal entry.
No legal residency.
No legal citizenship.
Nobody can sponsor you or petition for you to enter the USA for any reason for any amount of time if you are deported with a felony.
People who think "oh, what is the problem, it's just a made up number, no big deal".... are wrong. It is a felony, it is a serious crime, and anyone who commits that crime is considered a hardened criminal by the United States, and that person is not welcome in the United States.
Stop making excuses for the crimes people commit.
Some illegal aliens are using stolen social security numbers to work, and to take out loans they do not pay back, buy cars they do not pay for, get credit cards, charge them to the max and never pay a dime, get medical care they do not pay for, get social serivices which the real number holder is forced to pay for.
Using a social security number which does not legally belong to you, can become the rightful owners nightmare for a long time, and cost the rightful numbers owner a lot of money.
Shame on you people who think this is a victimless crime, it is NOT.

1) Even once they're discovered to be illegal, the employer can keep them an additional 3 months. Which I think is dumb, and favors hiring illegals. They should be deported immediately to discourage illegals and employers who hire them. If they were deported, employers would just run ads to hire *gasp, choke* AMERICANS, and if they have a shortage of applicants, then they'd have to re-run the ad offering higher (i.e. REASONABLE) wages.
2) there's no disputing that illegals pay taxes. The point is that they take out a lot more in benefits (welfare, free medical care, criminal prosecution, cost of imprisonment, criminal gangs and drugs, insurance and credit fraud, etc.) than they pay in.
Many here on YahooAnswers have posted about the net billions illegals cost U.S. taxpayers annually.
There was a recent story about the mild crackdown on employers of illegals, on PBS news hour:

Most or at least many, work for cash, paid daily. No ssn is checked, no taxes with held no record of them working. many use the ssn of children under working age or the number of dead people. IRS and the social security office is so full of bureaucrats that Can not or will not correlate misused ssn cards.
