Please don't have a hernia about this. It's true. Even the best joke was taken as an insult or understood critically. Thus brought me to the realization that Indians do NOT have a funny bone. WHY?

Actually... I think you're looking at the wrong side of the coin. Indians are sensitive people which is why we sometimes seem to lack a sense of humour.
You see, Indian society grooms people in a very protective and sheltered environment, where we're rarely exposed to less than polite talk.
Therefore in an external environment, there exists the illusion that one may be picked upon, or viewed with a critical eye. We get rather annoyed if a fellow Indian makes a joke, albeit in a light veined manner, about India and the Indians, so naturally, we would feel rather provoked if a foreigner does that. Also, religious Indians are a little prudish about dirty jokes. I guess that would be the case just when they're new to the culture and don't know you well enough. Once they settle down and are able to gel well with the society, you'll find most of them to be amiable people who crack jokes (sometimes really bad ones) all the time. :-)

The term "Indian" means two things.
A native aboriginal of the North American continent (mistakenly called Indians because the European explorers thought they had reached the Indian continent) , which can be subdivided further into various tribes and clans or the people who live in India, which also mistakenly lumps other nations in that general vicinity of the world. Even Pakistanis, afghans, New Zealanders, Fujians , even people from the Carribeans are often mistakenly called "Indians"
There is a cultural difference and a large language barrier perhaps? Only the ones who were born in your country, went to school there and grew up with you as a childhood friend, classmate at school, and reached adulthood in your neighborhood will fully understand your jokes unfortunately and be rolling in the floor laughing with you.
Be patient. Humor is not easy to teach. You might teach him to laugh at some things which is considered innappropriate to laugh at back home and get him in trouble so start slowly.

I think it's not good to make a judgement about a country by facing with few people of that country or by a single event.
And in case of INDIA it's more difficult bcoz.......
INDIA consists of...30 States, 1618 Languages, 6400 castes, 6 Religion, 6 Ethnic groups AND 29 major festivals .
Actually ur sense of humour depends on ur present mental condition. If u have a funny bone then people will not get hurt by ur words easily but sometimes it takes time to realise others about ur funny nature.

Sense of humour is an act of displaying human intellegence to prevail upon his own assertions. While doing so, the doer is deeply engrossed in ensuring his disposal of the matter he is dealing in with a conviction he carries for himself. It therefore discards the counterpart in totality because that is the very purpose of sense of humour.
While human specie is naturally bestowed with orignal creation packed gestures and displays which human refrains to practice due to fear of getting dominated over.
Now, you can search a single man on this earth out of indian or any other race and it is not possible as it is not the truth.

Yes, Indians do not have a sense of humour. And yet I have found funny, entertaining and witty people in India. The problem with Indians when being laughed at they go into a huge sulk and can't take it. No problem in doling it out though! Indians take life and all its problems too literally and far too seriously. They take their life's responsibility very seriously. Always doing their best for the family. Can't be a bad thing either. They worry about their children far far more than parents do in the west. But hey, I did not say they love their children any more than they do in the west.

Indians have a great sense of humour and love to laugh. They appreciate good jokes, but not insults in the garb of humour. The person who posts a joke should be aware of the line of demarcation between the two.

It depends on the way & context and most of all who said what? molystly Indians do not coprehend the real essence of funny things said in english. this is due to their language favorability for jokes or humourous things. one other aspect is that Indian have a different flavor for jokes which might not match with any other foreigners' taste so please bear upon with us...by the way if you are in Philippines & talking to Indians (local) there then you r right..but If you are talking about working class indians there then I am sure you tried a gone case..ha ha Salamat Po!
