My mothers eyes are brown and my dads are hazel. Nobody in my family (unless they are wayyyyy back farther than we know) have blue eyes. As far as we know, I'm the only person in the family with blue eyes. Why is that? Where did I get them from? I thought eye color was hereditary..but I don't know. Any ideas?

Since brown eyes are dominant a brown eyed person can carry some very strong recessive blue eyed genes and pass them on to their children.

It is a fallacy that two blue eyed people cannot have a brown eyed child.
Since brown eyes are dominant if a blue eyed person has a brown eyed parent it means any recessive brown eyed genes they carry are very weak. However, if you combine the weak recessive genes from both parents it can produce that trait. Therefore 2 blue eyed people can have a brown eyed child, if for instance both of the blue eyed persons had a brown eyed parent.

I have a friend who has 2 brothers with PHD in the field of genetics and university profs. They have stated the above is true.
I know a family where both parents were blue eyed but both of them each had a brown eyed parent and they produced brown eyed children.

Blue is recessive, meaning that generally the darker eye colors will prevail. Your eyes show that there were blue eyed ancestors on both sides of your family. You are a rare individual who shows the diversity of your family tree. My daughter wonders where her hair color came from in the same way.

There was a show on TV which showed the
path the actual Amazon women took from Greek around the world to Mongolia. There are still the odd light haired, light eyed, freckled children! Amazing!

you've inherited a recessive gene from your parents. most likely, someone long ago who has probably already passed away in your family has had blue eyes. you have a chance of getting brown eyes, hazel eyes or the recessive blue eyes. my mom and dad both have blue eyes, and so do i although they sometimes change to green and hazel, i don't know why. but, blue eyes are totally gorgeous!

It is hereditary. Your great great Grandpa could of had blue eyes and you still get them:) It is silly how it works. But it is true.

2 brown eyed people can have a blue eyed child but 2 blue eyed people cannot have a brown eyed child. Blue eyes must have been somewhere back in your gene pool.

Lissa...that's not possible. Is she adopted?

It might be a regressive alelle. You were just fortunate enough to get it. OR, it might be a mutation in the gene that effects eye colour that may have occured while you were first concieved. OR you may be adopted.
