To make a stew, you will obviously actually boil the meat and veggies up in water, which makes a stock of its own, but simply add soup powder of your choice to the stew once you decide that all the ingredients is cooked through and soft enough.
Soup powder will thicken the stew and give it a nice flavor.
Hint: Always mix soup powder with a little cold water before adding it to hot stew. That prevents lumping.
Hint: Beef stew of any kind, from a stroganoff to a hot pot always cooks better in a pressure pot.
Meat is soft, tender and moist after cooking.
Hint: If you are going to add soup powder to the stew, do not add salt while cooking. First wait to see how salty the soup powder makes the broth. If needed, then add a little salt to suit your taste.
Have fun

Kinda depends on the recipe, but generally stews with beef stock use it to add a little extra beefiness to the flavor. Really, you can stew in any liquid, as long as it works well with the other ingredients. Sometimes I'll use red wine, sometimes beer (works really well in chili). You could probably use water and a couple of beef boullion cubes, although the beef flavor in those tends to be pretty fake. Chicken stock could be used in a pinch, too; it will still have the flavor from the beef itself, but the overall flavor might be a little lighter. You could also throw in some dried shitake mushrooms and a little soy sauce, if you have them. That can provide a similar depth of flavor as beef stock, although it's obviously not quite the same taste.

My nephew and I discussed beef stew today. I've always used just water because I use good beef. Besides the veggies (always potatoes, carrots, onions and green pepper and sometimes celery, beans and/or corn), I use a lot of herbs. My stew always is excellent. I'm making it tomorrow for my nephew and me. I've never used tomato products in my stew...I use tomato products in goulash and swiss steak, but not stew. I guess it's the way I was raised.

you could use canned beef or chicken stock, or use bullion cubes dissolved in water..if you have instant gravy you could dilute it with 1&1/2-2 times the amt of water called for..your onions, carrots and potatoes {and any other vegs} along with the beef will add additional flavor.
