Yes, need to seal. You can buy a matte finish clear sealer that will retain that rough look. Sealer will prolong the life of the cedar and make it easier to keep clean. Cedar has a high rep for durability but if you live in a humid climate - it can rot and attract bugs. As an additional - cedar only detracts certain bugs like moths. Cedar chests are sealed with oils. Age and any type oil/seal will slightly darken the wood progressively.

No you do not need to seal cedar. If you ever looked into a cedar chest you would see that it is not sealed. I think it would take away the beauty of the wood. Cedar is used in many applications where long life is desired. It is not subject to rot or insect damage. This is why the chest are lined with it.

All I can tell you is I put rough light cedar in my bathroom in my last house. I had this great wall paper that just picked up that color. And then I sealed the cedar and it changed colors and no longer matched the wall paper exactly. And the wall paper was too great to get rid of. . .I got it to work and rough cedar, crystal and lace was just a super look. . .especially with THAT wallpaper.
