A rebellious angel v God almighty? Hmm...

And why did God create the bugger in the first place? He must have known what would happen (being all-seeing)?

Also, if Heaven and God are so wonderful, why wasn't Satan content with them?

That is a good question., unfortunately all of the answers have been rubbish.

This is the answer , from the Bible.

When that angel turned away from under Gods righteous rule he became an opposer to him.
The name or title given to him , 'Satan' means 'opposer'.

Although Satan had enjoyed a very good position in the heavens he desired more , much more.
He wanted humans to follow him and not the almighty God.

He could not give the first human pair anything better , as God had given them all that they could even want or need.
So what Satan did was offered them a lie.

Satan said that they would 'NOT' die if they disobeyed God (by taking the fruit) but instead THEY would become 'like God'.
He also insinuated that God knew this and was holding back from them something very good.

The couple must have thought about this an dwelled on the idea until they had convinced themselves it was a good idea.

Anyway , they took the fruit and disobeyed God.

Now remember that along with God and Jesus and the other characters mentioned here , there is also millions of other angels looking on.

These angels would have seen and known the importance of what was going on.

What had happened was a making of a universal issue.
Who was the rightful ruler for all of creation , was it God or Satan ?

True God is the most powerful but even if he had of destroyed the rebellious creatures , would that have settled the issue.
Not at all.- in fact it would have made it worse.

God has particular qualities , and one of them is justice.

God had to let things go on to show who is the rightful ruler., and this means time.
Yes , God had to allow time to pass to show , to prove , is it better to follow God willingly or to 'do your own thing' , and follow Satan.

I am sure you would agree that the sorry state of the world today proves without any doubt that life under Satan's rule , is NOT the best way.

What we need to do is reject all things that Satan's un-Gogly lifestyle promotes and prove that we follow God in every way in our lives.

God created free will and respects free will. If he didn't, he would be like the devil in the way he does not respect free will. The battle of good vs evil is not between God and the devil, it's between Jesus and the devil, and Jesus already won.

We are already fallen spirits. This world is a place created to save souls, a place where the un-fallen son of God became incarnate, worked miracles before thousands, and died for us, asking that we may return to the Father's kingdom through him. Death and decay are a result of the fall, because when you do not abide in Divine law, you are cut off from the light, thus we decay. Our fallen natures do not allow us to see this clearly, also we are venerable to spirits who are trying to keep us in the pit, spirits who encourage sinners to reject Jesus in their lives.

When I worship Jesus he fills my heart with love. He wakes me up and heals me. Give him a chance. Maybe the voice telling you to mock him inst the voice you should be obeying.

peace

Here's a really good answer to a similar question given a couple of days ago. Credit to Don H. Hope I'm not stealing your thunder, Don... :)

In ancient Jewish tradition Satan is simply an angel doing the work that God assigned to Satan to do.

The word Satan means challenger. With the idea of Satan challenging us, or tempting if you will. This description sees Satan as the angel who is the embodiment of man's challenges. This idea of Satan works closely with God as an integral part of Gods plan for us. His job is to make choosing good over evil enough of a challenge so that it becomes clear to us that there can be only one meaningful or logical choice.

Contrast this to Christianity, which sees Satan as God's opponent. In Jewish thought, the idea that there exists anything capable of setting itself up as God's opponent would be considered polytheistic or setting up the devil to be an equally powerful polarity to god or a demigod.

Oddly, proof for The Christian satan/devil mythology is supposedly found in the ancient Jewish texts that were borrowed to create the bible. One can’t help but wonder how Christians came up with such a fantastically different interpretation of Gods assistant Satan in their theology.

Other hints about Satan’s role in human relations can be seen if you look at the name Lucifer. It’s meaning in the original tongue translates as Light bearer or light bringer. Essentially the bringer of enlightenment. The temptations of the Satan idea bring all of us eventually into Gods light. Hardly the Evil entity of Christian mythology.

God and Satan are only
simple concepts for simple minds.
These are only supersets of beings
belonging to either group,
good or evil.
In earlier times mankind was ruled by kings.
So man imagined a supernatural king i.e. God.
Similarly mankind imagined about satan.

But logically , it seems, that just like we have
human society divided into good & evil,
civilized and criminals,
similarly the beings in the afterworld,
probably, belong to this categorisation.
Harmful ones belong to satan , such as diseases,
bacteria & viruses. In olden times diseases
were supposed to caused by evil spirits,
but now we know.

According to Buddha , the reincarnation
of beings happen and this is being organised
by satan and those who evolve
and achieve salvation/nirvana ,
by forsaking all desire for worldly pleasures,
they break this cycle of reincarnation
and move up into the state of salvation / nirvana,
from where there is no return,
a state of all powerful & blissful & eternal existence
and it is opposed to the works of the devil.
The beings in the state of salvation / nirvana
are the constituents of the concept of God
similar to the MPs of a parliament
which creates laws. They act as one.
These good beings are supportive of the
well being of creatures so that they
also move up.
Whereas the satan is opposed to their
moving up and he snares the creatures in to
the trap of worldly pleasure , wealth, sex etc.
and the beings remain engrossed in them
and in the cycles of reincarnations & rebirths
until they realize themselves that the
worldly pleasure is misleading into misery
ultimately. And this realization makes them
search for the truth , the way to get liberated,
just like Buddha or Jesus. (Both fought the devil)

So the satan cannot be eliminated
because bad / evil beings will always exist
in our society as well as in the afterworld
as misguided ones , those who havent
learnt their lesson.
However as creatures with free will,
WE , ourselves , need to
understand this trap of devil and
get rid of the desire
for the worldly pleasures
from our own hearts and minds
and that is the way to salvation /nirvana.

He serves Gods purpose but not his divine will. In the Bible it shows that Satan is used by God to serve purposes by cause and affect. Also it is my understanding that it is the spirit of sin living and working in man that is influenced by the fruits of the spirit of Satan. By Satan's greed and lust for power he would have destroyed heaven and earth to get control over it. You can see sin and the fruits of his spirit working through evil men such as Hitler and Saddam Husein, etc... There greed and lust for power were so great they would have destroyed the earth and everyone on her to gain control over her.

He created Satan to perfect us; like fire is to purifying Gold and pain is to the Oysters producing Pearls -the greater the pain, the greater the beauty the Pearl.
Can you comprehend the Wisdom of God?

To put it crudely No Great Bull, no Great Matador !

Because God keeps time. It's very apparent in those Feasts that the Jews observe. But God counts things and keeps time.

It's not Satan's time yet.

The angels are of the same realm as God. Of all the angels, He gave one all authority over heaven. Natch, there's always the chance that authority will be misused and it was.

It makes sense that this experience motivated God to create something closer to the perfection He seeks. Angels cannot love and since love is the creative power that seeks always a return (just like electricity), man had to be created to perfect the 'circuit' so to speak.

Satan, who's name is Lucifer (brilliant one) is also a creation of God. God does not seek to destroy His own creation. The trap was set and now satan must destroy himself. He's doing a 'brilliant' job of it.

Now. Why ask about the things of heaven when you can't even understand the things of this world?

He needed a fall guy for all the bad things that he knew were going to happen but did not want to stop.

Without Lucifer to take the rap who would people have to blame?
