You have been mis-informed. The fact your rifle was manufactured in 1962 does in fact have a bearing on the value as the Marlin 30-30 has gone thru several model transitions that directly affect the priceing/value.There should also be a "Letter" pre-fix at the beginning of the serial number that denotes the year of manufacture. If in fact your rifle was made in 1962 it should have a "V" letter prefix.

Assuming you have a Lever Action Rifle, you have the following.

Marlin Model 30/30A Lever Action,20" Barrel, Promotional "Glenfield" Model with Birch Stock and Pressed Checkering. Manufactured between 1962-1983. These Rifles were mass produced. This particular Model was changed to a 30AS in 1983

Prices are based on overall condition and are listed based by percentage of finish remaining including normal wear and tear from use.

100% Condition $220
90% " $135
80% " $120
70% " $110
60% " $100

Marlin 30-30 Rifles along with the Winchester Model 94 30-30 Rifles have the destinction of being the most popular Deer hunting rifles in U.S. history.

pre 1964 only matters with Winchester's 30-30 rifles. As that pre-64's had a 1 piece milled receiver and post 64's are several pieces that are assembled into 1. The pre 64 demands a premium because they are regarded as being better quality.

Any good blue book of guns should list a price based off an additions to it and the condition of wood and metal finishes. Without a picture or very good description of the gun, it's too diffcult to quote you a price.
