This is called "Thought Blocking" and is a naturally occuring phenomena. It is the brain taking a rest. Often, however, it may indicate that you are feeling particuarly stressed or that relaxation techniques may really help you.

This happens to me sometimes. I'll be talking, thinking or trying to explain something then all of a sudden my mind just goes blank & I completely forget what I was saying or thinking about for a minute or two. I'm sure it happens to a lot of people though.
