At places such as Home Depot and lumber stores they have 8'x4' panels that are already painted, or papered, or covered in a pretty-patterned plastic material.

You could also use room dividers or screens.

There are a number or things that come to mind...

Wallpaper. Nowadays, wallpaper is easy to remove, not like it used to be. It's also easy to hang.

Paint. I know, you're in a rental. Consider painting it anyway. You can repaint before leaving. Or not. Not many landlords go after old tenants to have them repaint or pay the cost of repaining. It just isn't worth their time and money.

Fabric. Hang with a curtain rod (use bistro type rods right smack up to the ceiling. Or use staples. Staple holes are tiny and won't show. You can also staple wallpaper....

Paintings. Yep. Huge, large colorful framed paintings or posters. These fill up walls quite nicely.

Murals. You can get amazing murals today! You can even have them custom-made... Supposing you have this fantastic picture from your vacation, or someone you love and it's just a great picture... Have it made into a mural the size of the wall and then using removable spray glue from 3M, glue it to the wall.

Collage. Yep. Not many people do this anymore but it gives some fantastic effects. I have a friend who did this in a design course and he got the highest mark in the class. He did a bathroom. He simply cut out all sorts of pictures lipsticks, makeup, etc. from magazines and then glued them with removable 3M glue to the walls. He used a water-based removeable sealer in spray. The effect was stunning.

Plants. Yep. Use lots of greenery in the rooms to take away the effect from bland, white walls.

The other option is to choose a color that won't offend and nicely visit your landlord and ask him if you pay the paint and he agrees on the color, can you please paint your walls. He may just agree. Sometimes, the landlord doesn't want color because he doesn't want to be stuck with an ugly color. Giving him approval on the color may just change his mind. Especially if he doesn't have to shell out for the cost or the work.

That's about all you can do... without anything permanent...

Enjoy!

Wall paper is a good alternative for painting. Lowe's and Home Depot carry a variety of attractive designs. You can choose the pattern, color scheme and decor that fits your lifestyle.

Good luck girlfriend.

Try fabric. You can hang it from curtain rods, use push pins to hold it up, or use starch made into paste to glue it up. It will come down when you want to take it down, and then wash the wall to remove the starch.

How on earth can you cover a wall without painting or using non permanent stuff? Thats impossible. Paint is cheap. So repaint it the color it is now when you decide to move.

These are the coolest alternative to traditional curtain rods I have ever seen:
http://www2.jcpenney.com/jcp/Products.aspx?DeptID=2652&CatID=31347&CatTyp=DEP&ItemTyp=G&GrpTyp=SIZ&ItemID=13110f7&ProdSeq=1&ProdCount=1&Dep=Online+Outlet+Store&RefPage=SearchDepartment&ShowMenu=T&ShopBy=0&SearchString=cable+curtain+rods&S4DeptID=2652&CmCatId=SearchResults|SearchDepartment&Search1Prod=True

and since they are so industrial looking it won't appear that you are trying to pass off curtain rods as wall hanging devices. Plus they are an amazingly cheap price.
I wish I had a reason to buy them!!
