Has anyone trained their cat to do certain things? Ive heard that you can actually train them, such as turning off your light switch at night, etc.

My cat is now 2 years old though. Is this too late to train? He is awfully affectionate to me, but he only seems to listen when i have food. He does come when i call him, and he seems pretty smart, but All i have been able to teach his is to meow for his special snacks.

How can i encourage him to learn more tricks?

Any advice on training or

There's cat training videos over on Youtube.com You can avoid the ones about training them to go on the toilet, look for the clicker training videos. One shows a cat learning how to turn on a light switch.

Also, over at petfinder.com last week they had a little 3 minute video on the right side of the page showing how to train a cat in two or three days to give you a high five.

Think most cats learn these things on their own or by simply watching you go through you daily routines.

I never taught my cat how to get into my cuberts. She did it herself. However she was a very "nosy" cat and wanted to know where everything was.

One day I opened the drawer in my kitchen and got the scare of my life ... you got it, there she was taking her afternoon nap. I'm sure if she was an out door cat, she would have learned to use the door nob to let herself out.

Cats are smart and they're watching you all the time if they aren't napping in your drawers.

Sometimes I wondered who's teaching who. If you aren't
petty them while on your lap, they will make sure of that with their nudges with their paws or when they want that last drop of water on the bottom of your glass and use a paw to dunk and drink.

What they don't learn on their own, I'm sure they can be trained. Just be careful what you train them to do unless you want them to turn on your bedroom light in the middle of the night.

Another thing, my cat could do was tell time. Yes, it's true. She woke us up every morning at 5:30 AM for breakfast and was never late. Then at 3:00 PM in the after noon she knew it was time to eat again.

We miss are crazy cat. She let us go at 25 yrs. old three weeks ago. But look at all the memories she left us with.

Try some training .... just don't teach your cat to tell time or turn on light switches. GOOD LUCK

Well, good luck with that. Most cats are very stubborn. They are nothing like dogs. They won't come when you call, unless they want to, and that's only when what you are doing looks more interesting than their nap, bathing, or whatever they have going on at the time. :o)

Cats learn things that they are actually interested in themselves. For example, my cat does turn the switch on, but that is only so that he wakes us up to feed him. He wouldn't turn the switch off as a curtesy to us, even if he knew that we want him to.
