i have a minolta x700, i took a photo class in high school which i don't remember too much of. can anyone, in a simple easy to understand way, explain to me about f-stops, aperture, and anything that will get me going. i know that there is some sort of chart and what not that goes along with f-stops and whatnot, can anyone just give me some easy answers as to how these things work? thanks.

Good exposure is a combination of two variables, the aperture, measured by the f-stop number, and the shutter speed. If you adjust one variable, then the other variable must also change to keep the same exposure.

The aperture controls how much light comes through the lens. The shutter speed controls how long that light actually hits the film or sensor.

Thus, if you let more light in, to keep the same exposure, the amount of time the shutter is open must be reduced. Likewise, if you let less light in (a bigger f-stop number), you have to expose the sensor/film longer (slow shutter speed).

If you want to know more, experiment with a digital camera with manual exposure options!

Most cameras have a manual mode. Or Apeture priority or F-stop priority. It all depends on the effect you want. It actually can be very complicated but the camera can make some, if not all the decisions for you. I would recommend getting a book on photography if you are really interested in learning a great craft....

Good luck!

It can get pretty techincal so you may want to brew a pot of coffee and take your time if it gets overwhelming.

Hope this helps
