Violent crime: H = S. Carolina
L = Vermont
Murder: H = Louisiana
L = N. Dakota, Maine, New Hampshire
Robbery: H = Illinois
L = N. Dakota
Property: H = Arizona
L = N. Dakota, S. Dakota
Honorable mention for lowest, Idaho was close in most every category as was Utah. If Washington DC were a state, they'd be number one for highest hands down. Vermont was quite low in most categories as was N Dakota. Lower population density appears to equate to lower crime rate as does a lack of strict gun control laws. Texas (as noted) is an aberation to this trend where they are in the upper middle in all areas except property crimes where they are one of the highest. However, all of the states bordering Mexico have higher then norm crime rates.

Utah with the lowest crime rate?? Are you kidding me? lol
Vermont has the lowest crime rate, Nevada- the highest.
Since when the lack of strict gun controls influences the crime rates? Look at Texas!

Not sure about highest, but one of the lowest crime rates of any state is Utah - which, oddly enough (and to the bain of pro-gun control fanatics), has the laxest gun control laws in the nation.
Olesya...if stricter gun control is good, why is it that the four cities with the strictest gun control laws (Washington D.C., San Francisco, Chicago, and New York City) account for 25% of all violent crime in this country?
