It's called the military is hurting to get people that are willing to serve their country. Most of the people that join the military want to serve their country and the money is just an added benefit, check the statistics on recruiting (race, income, and geographics.) Unfortunately so many people in the U.S. want to live in the land of milk and honey, but aren't willing to truly earn the right. How many people don't even bother to vote on any election or don't really have an clue about the person they did vote for? Not everyone is cut out for military service due to whatever reason. It is voluntary to enlist and I don't look down on those that choose not to enlist. Don't hate the people in the military, hate the jerk politicians that sent us to places we had no business being in the first place. We didn't pick the battles we fought, we did our duty to the best of our abilities; someone else told us to go there. Bad things happen in war, sometimes its in the heat of the moment (making a decision instantly about shooting or not) and unfortunately sometimes its just sadistic people taking advantage of the situation. The sadistic part counts for organized armies and the radicals running around blowing themselves up.

The bonus is a nice thought, but most join regardless of the extra money being thrown around. It's called patriotism.
My family makes twice the US Median (which still isn't great $$), but both of my daughters who are straight-A class leaders at their high school cannot wait to graduate and enlist into the Army. Besides the money, great education benefits, the chance to travel and help others, the military offers an opportunity for them tho give back to our country which has provided so much for all of us. It would be a shame to go through life and not have participated in one's civic duty, even if for a four-year stint.

Of course not. There is no draft to force people into the service.
The people that enlist do it for love of country and for a steady income.

They can get valuable training in a lot of different kinds of fields that they might not be able to get had they not gone into the service.

We would be sitting ducks if we did not have the wonderful military there to protect us, be thankful your an American and do your part to help instead of complaining and putting the military down!!!!!!

The enlistment bonuses are used as incentive to get people to sign up for critically undermanned jobs in the military.

Nope, my parents are middle class and do very well and I still joined. I told them I would ever since grade school, so they knew I was going and always supported me. I didn't die either.

BUT a girl in my city died while she was home on R&R, she was at the lake with her family, her brother was drowning and she jumped in to help him, but both ended up drowning. She was days away from returning to Iraq.

I don't think that many have died in Iraq than would have died otherwise.

There are more deaths in many cities around this country (the US) than in Iraq per day due to violence, check out the FBI's website, there's one section you can look up murder and other types of violence for all area's of the US. Check it out.

How else can you get people to go off to fight in a war that shouldn't be taking place?

And for the commie who said love it or leave it I say you are a fool if you are a soldier because you are obviously fighting for a way of life that you don't believe in. I hope you got your 20K.

In this country we are good and honorable people for the most part and we speak out against wrong even if it is wrong within our own race or our own government. Try fighting that war, Slick, then you can call yourself an american.

Be more specific please? Are you referring to blacks? Or just poor people in general?

Either way, maybe it's a way for them to improve their lives and get a free education. Enlistment incentives target nobody particular, it's there for anybody who wants the opportunity.
Pat Tillman, he was poor right? I didn't know it was just poor people dying.

Probably, it's also a good way to end up owing the government alot of money because you are injured and unable to continues your enlistment. After all if you die or get hurt and are discharged before your tour is up, you have to pay them back. Pretty rotten Huh?
