I am an atheist who left Christianity about 6 years ago. My main reasons were I couldn't find any more evidence to support it any more than other religions and things that I felt were very immoral in the Bible (slavery, death for working on the Sabbath, ect.). I am not trying to cause hostillity towards Christians here, I would just like a genuinely honest answer. This is for anyone who is now a Christian but honestly looked into other religions with an open mind and came to the conclusion that Christianity is the one true religion. What were the reasons that you really believe Christianity to be true?

I really respect people who try to learn all they can rather than just following religion blindly- that's why your question grabbed me.
Just like any book, if a million different people read it, they'll each have a different idea of it. So right away if you listen to any person about any religion you'll be getting someone else's viewpoint rather than what your own view might be if you try it out yourself with different sources. I have tried doing that, and here's what I honestly believe:
The Old Testament (with the rules and all) is NOT the guideline of Christianity, just a background story of Jesus' ancestry. The rules in the Old Testament were only regulations that the Israelites at the time lived by, and they are not supposed to be what Christians follow today.
Christ Himself didn't come along until the New Testament part of the bible. If you read that, you'll see that the God that Christianity is based on (Jesus) did not agree with those religious leaders' rules like putting people to death for misbehaving (like in John chapter 8).
The Bible isn't the only sacred book with objectionable content, by far. =) It is the only one, however, that offers free salvation rather than demanding rules to be followed and tallying up a checklist of good deeds. We're only asked to show others the love and forgiveness that we've been shown, and to have faith. Unlike Islam, where there are eight gates to enter paradise, each for different things like fasting and fighting in jihaad, or Hinduism where you just get whatever you dish out and then you're recycled, all Christians are asked to do is love and be loved.
The problem is so many "Christians" today like to flash around the nice shiny "I'm A Christian" label without even attempting to live the life of love which, if we truly have faith, we naturally want to do. They'd rather be bigots (which contradicts the teachings of Christ who originally started the golden rule thing), they'd rather get on TV and ask for money for themselves (which contradicts the teachings of Christ who said it's better to give than recieve)... the list goes on. And that leaves a ton of people with a horrible, incorrect impression of an actual loving God, who has done so much for me personally that it would take way more room than I'd have to type here.
Besides, if there weren't really Jesus that'd mean there isn't really a Satan... and if there isn't a Satan then why has Christianity been the only religion to have been consistently persecuted for 2,000 years?

While I do indeed see things of value in buddhism and pagan/wiccan thought, the fact is that Christianity depends on a personal RELATIONSHIP with the Creator of the Universe. Once you have actually met Him, there's really no need for 'evidence' or 'proof'. God is a person, not a natural phenomenon. You can't expect Him to act like your own personal wish vending machine. The issues you mention in the Bible are the result of God telling the truth about mankind. It's NOT an endorsement. In the Old Testament, God was working to tame an insanely dangerous species. Once that was accomplished, He was able to send His Son to complete the process. These are not scientific principles. They are history.

Unlike all other religions, Christianity alone possesses a founder who transcends death and who promises that His followers will do the same. All other (false) religions were founded by men and prophets whose end was the grave. As Christians, we take comfort in the fact that our God became man, died for our sins, was killed, and was resurrected the third day. The grave could not hold Him. He lives and He sits today at the right hand of God the Father in heaven. The living church has a living Head.

Of all that I have discovered about religions of the world,
only Christianity causes people everywhere to consider the empty tomb of Jesus. No other makes this claim. This claim can be proven outside the Scriptures by secular historians who were not Christian. They wrote of seeing Him with their own eyes.
Don't try to follow a movement or be a part of religion.
Following after the Son of God who was raised from the dead with power is what every believer needs to do.

you don't understand slavery. you don't understand the difference between the slave practice, and slavery.

I can't say I looked with an open mind, I looked went into them like everything, including my own faith: skepticism.

for me, it was simply faith. my guess is that God would not have given us many religions. there simply cannot be many truths. that completely defies the laws of possibility. that can't work. 2+2=4 not 5.3! 4! and it always will. so that really only leaves religions that believe in one truth.

cults disturb me. the idea of glorifying a person, invoking spiritual experiences for gain and or chanting are quite disturbing. so that leaves monotheism.

I don't believe God would want His followers to not truly love Him, but to love Him and not do it simply out of obsequeousness, tradition or as a temporrary reprieve. so that leaves out Islam, Judaism and quite a bit of Christianity.

I don't believe that God would create rules and then let us decide which ones to follow or to tell Him what His rules mean. that completely defeats the purpose of a rule. so we move onto conservative Christianity

reading the Bible, you know God likes excitement, He likes laughter, but He doesn't hate you or condemn you if you worship best through your work or excellence. one of the earliest words used for worship also implies work (abad).

then there's the motive. Allah is distant, Vishnu is selective, but the Lord is personal. He'd die for me, that's Good enough for me.

In every other religion man searches for God. In Christianity God reaches out to man in the person and work of Jesus Christ. I can understand your being turned off by Old Testament legalism. Christ said that there were two main commandments. To love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength and to love your neighbor as your self. I know that's easier said than done, but God gives the believer wisdom, grace, and strength to live the Christian life. Otherwise it would be impossible and ultimately frustrating.

One night 2 years ago, I was at the end of my rope. I was so depressed about my life and I didnt know what to do. Out of nowhere I started crying and saying I accept you into my heart Jesus. Help me Jesus please I need a miracle anything. I woke up the next morning, went outside, and everything was glowing. I felt like I was seeing the world's beauty for the first time. The trees, grass, clouds. Everything looked so beautiful and full of life. It was the most incredible feeling I ever felt and saw. Just seeing and feeling all of that gave me a whole new look on life. Helped me from committing suicide as well. And to this day, I will always be a Christian because of it.

Because what Jesus said was true. He gives the Holy Spirit to those who trust Him.

So you were never really chosen by God, or you failed to know anything really substantial about the things of God and treated it cheaply, like Esau. But God already chose Jacob, 'Jacob I loved, Esau I hated', so Esau never really had a say in it. God didn't want Esau just like He most likely never really wanted you, so you were seed that fell in the rocks; to be withered as soon as it got too hot for you.

I am not trying to start a fight or anything, it's just that according to John 6 and Romans 9, God doesn't want some people. And you apparently are one of those people God doesn't want; by your own words, that is.

Have a good life!

Religion is based on little more than culture. Go to India, or many other places in Asia, and those who follow Hinduism, the oldest still followed major religion, will view Christianity as taboo just as those in our culture view all other religions. This can be said for countless religions around the world. It is due to child indoctrination, which is highly psychological.

For a lot of people....it is just a sense or feeling of belonging, security, and hope. The truth doesn't even count much by the end of the day but it is how happy you are in the brotherhood you share with your fellows in the church. Just like any fraternities or gangs.
