it makes me sad that they can't think for themselves. the phone doesn't know how good your server was. a person should tip according to their service.

Sad. Just look at the amount before any taxes were added. Also check the bill to make sure that a tip was not already included. Then move the decimal one place to the left. That is 10% of the pretax amount. Decide from there if you want to add more. Even someone very poor at arithmetic knows how to add (or subtract) a part of it. On second thought, 10% is enough for someone carrying plates and glasses to your table and getting your order right and in reasonable time.

Well, my bill never comes to an exact round number like yours do, so to make sure that I tip enough, I use my tip calculator to figure 15- 20%, depending on how good the service was, and round up to the next dollar and that's what I leave.
How lucky you are to have bills that are always so simple to figure. Either that or you are just a genius.

Its acceptable.
Say the total is $34.76
Round it up to $35. Multiply it by 2, you get 70. Move the decimal one place to the left, you get 7. $7 will be the 20% tip, add or subtract as necessary for the type of service you got.
OH, and I make sure tips are not automatically added. If its already added, ZERO tip. If I feel like it, I'll talk to the manager to get the automatic one taken off (you can get it taken off you know... just complain to the manager, I've done it before!) then do the tip as necessary.

I think they are referring to the fact that some cell phones have tip calculators built into them.
My wife always uses it -- very, very sad...
I just give a tip that is reasonable. Your phone doesn't take into account poor/slow service or bad food...or even an extra good job by your waitress/waiter.

So, you KNOW that everyone's bill is $30? I was a math major in college, am quite good at math, but in 10 seconds trying to figure 15% of 64.37 is tough.
Personally, I tip 20%... Why are YOU so cheap?

Some people just aren't very good at math. At least they are making sure they aren't short-changing the waitstaff.
