I was out walking my dog and an sheriff officer, had just picked up a stray dog stopped me and asked if I knew the stray. I said, I didn't. He asked me if I could help him to find her owner. I said, sure! So, I brought her home with me, put up flyers and ran an ad in the paper. No, one has claimed her. Question is? How long do I have to wait to say she's Mine! She's a wonderful Dog!!

Just to let everyone know, I have run an ad in the Paper and put up flyers in all surounding areas. Put flyers at all pet stores in town and she had a collar but no tags. All flyers have her picture on it. The sheriff didn't want to take her to the spca, he was afraid that they would put her to sleep. I hope that every dog he finds he will bring to me to train and find them a good home. If I can, I'm keeping her.

Traditionally, 14 days is the cut off for all things "lost and found" to find new owners.

If she has no tags, please have her scanned for a microchip and watch the "Lost" ads. I would also call the shelter to see if anyone has inquired about her. I know you want her, but she may have a loving family already. Maybe she slipped her collar and her people don't know what to do to locate her if she's not at the shelter. I would say if you've done all you can do to locate her rightful family and it's been more than 15 days, she's yours. Good luck!

Three weeks and if there's no reply, the dog is yours. Anyone looking for their animal would be desperately looking everywhere for two weeks for sure, if they cared about it at all.

Call your local vets and have them put a notice up on their boards for you. You can also take the dog to any vet that has a microchip reader and ask if they'll scan the dog for a chip, just in case.

something doesnt sound right.. he simply handed you the dog instead of impounding it himself???

you need to make sure there is a report filed on this dog - to prove you didnt steal it.. make sure you call your local SPCA or pound and report finding this dog - or make sure the officer did file a report leaving your name on it..

otherwise if the owner finds the dog in your care they could try to charge you with theft if you cannot show that you tried to find her correct owner..

laws are different in different countries.. typically its 2 weeks after you first report finding her to the correct authorities...
(if the SPCA or whatever finds a dog they have to wait 10 days if its a purebred.. 72 hours if not... in most places..) you, as a member of the public have to wait slightly longer...since owners should KNOW to go to the shelter.. it might take longer to find you...

Go have her shots and have her registered in your name. Just make sure she doesn't have a chip from someone else.
