Before I say anything else, I am an atheist. I was watching this thing on the news about a girl who got suspended for wearing an abstinence ring. They said that it violated the dress code of the school. I thought to myself, "Just let her wear the God damn ring." I thought this had to be one of the dumbest things I have ever heard of. I do think that public schools should remain secular, but that is just going way too far. The part that really made that school look hypocritical though was the fact that they still allowed Muslim women to wear their head scarves.

I agree with you. They are hypocrites and its true because its not like she wore something offensive to others. So yeah, youre right, but then again it is a public school so it doesnt really get much better than this if its free(or something that isnt as expensive like private schools).

Curb the profanity. It hurts your credibility.

Muslim women wear headscarves for as part of their RELIGIOUS PRACTICE. The wearing of rings is not a required religious practice for Catholics. That is why the Muslim women are allowed to wear head scarfs while the Catholic woman cannot wear rings. This policy would only be hypocritical if the wearing of rings was part of religious practice. It's not.

What you have to understand is the concept of discipline. Catholics schools typically turn out better students because such schools do not tolerate anything that could constitute a distraction, such as jewelry.

It's not as if the Church has anything against jewelry. The student can wear the chastity ring off school grounds as much as she wants. The Church doesn't have a problem with that, especially considering it's a chastity ring. However, in school - where learning is the priority - it's not necessary to wear jewelry.

No one has to go to a Catholic school. These are private institutions. As such, they have the right to dictate policy for itself. All students go their voluntarily. In doing so, they are stating their approval of the policy which the school enforces. If, after a time, the student becomes disenchanted with the school's policy, they are free to transfer out and go someplace where discipline is much more lax, as is the quality of the education.

the school had a ban on all religious jewlery.

for them to even know that it was religious means that she had to be telling someone about it.

she knew that the school had the ban. and she broke the rules anyway.

Muslims are allowed to wear their head scarves because their religion REQUIRES it.

Christianity does not require any specific dress of jewlery to be worn. niether do the many Pagan religions.

My school had a Ban on all religious and gang related symbols.

I wore my Penticle every day.
under my shirt where it belongs and simply did not talk about it. i NEVER had a problem.
