My Marine recruiter told me that the fiscal year 2006 ended in June 2007 and now they have slots for pilots. He said if i join the Marine, I will sign a closed contract and my MOS will be fighter pilot. Does this mean I will be a fighter pilot as long as I sign the closed contract and be qualified?
Also my Air Force recruiter said that if i am enlisted in the DEP, I can go to any Embry-Riddle campus(which is the biggest flight school in US) with all tuition covered by the Air Force. I dont know if this is true and i think there will be a slot limitation.
My goal is to become a pilot, in either AF or USMC.
I am new to the military and i really need help with this.
AF or USMC?
THX in advance

AF is the obvious choice. I have been through AOCS with Marine pilots and I can't think of any group of people who I respect more but the Air Force is a better deal for the pilot. It would have been great to be a Marine pilot but a Navy pilot has many more choices and their career is easier. Same goes for the AF.

Look man, the Marine is blowing smoke big time. I hate to say that about a fellow recruiter, but no branch can guarantee you to be a pilot. There is no such thing as a school seat for a pilot in any branch. First you must pass a rigorous flight physical. you have to have a bachelors degree and be an officer. Then you have to be excepted to flight school. The AF might have a school to help you get there, he might be able to guarantee the school for you, but the question is how do you qualify for it, and when will you be able to go? Be careful man it sounds like a ton of BS. Go through a ROTC program in collage, if you can afford it. There you can get you degree to become an officer and see if you can get into a flight program

They are both blowing smoke.
PILOTS are officers, meaning they have college degrees. if you ENLIST I can guarantee you, you will not be an officer and therefore you will not be a pilot. So what if you can get to be a private pilot at Embry-Riddle with tuition assistance? That will not make you an officer, it will not get you into the USAF flight school and it will not make you a fighter pilot.
If you want to be a fighter pilot your chances are best if you get into either the USAF Academy or the US Naval Academy. Graduate and you get your commission as an officer. Graduate near the top of the class and you get your pick of what you want to do.
If you can not get into one of the Academies, then go to college and go for some sort of engineering degree. Get good grades the first year and apply for ROTC. Get in that, do good, graduate and you get your commission as an officer and you may be able to get into flight school after that.
But do not ever think you can ENLIST and get a solid promise for flight training. It ain't going to happen. You would more likely be flying a sink full of dishes than anything else.

Hello, Bieng an Ex Marine and some one who know's the challenge of getting what you want when you join, if being a pilot is what you truly want and the Air Force has a direct opening into flight school I would go that route to garentee your training. If at a later date you decide the Marine Corp fighter program is something you want then you will allready have the training and after fullfillment of duty 6 yrs? You can re-enlist to the Corp's and continue, this time with a garenteed contract cause of the previous training. Good Luck and take care if any other question's please feel free to ask.Joseph E Bennett

Neither one can guarantee you an officer slot, With the tuition assistance you can complete your degree and apply, but there is NO guarantee you will be selected for an officer slot(let alone a fighter pilot slot), whether its AF or USMC. As far as going to school while in DEP, it won't be covered by TA. You have to be on active duty to use it. I highly suggest the AF if you want to have time to complete school. Last year the USMC completed about 1,800 degrees and the USAF completed roughly 27,000. Good luck

If you don't have a degree, you aren't going to be a pilot in the Marine Corps. Only Officers are pilots in the Marines. You need to go to college first, then you can contract with the recruiter to be a pilot in the Marine Corps.
If you aren't talking to an Officer Selection Officer (OSO) in the Marine Corps then you are probably being lied too. A regular recruiter can't contract you to be an officer.
I can't speak for the Air Force, never been a flyboy.

Your lying or you badly misheard what the Recruiters said.
Neither a Marine or a USAF recruiter told anyone who doesn't have a University Degree, than they can enlist to be a pilot.
There are no enlisted Pilots, All pilots are Officers.
You have to have a University Degree to be a pilot.
No service is going to enlist you, just to send you to College.
If you want to be a pilot.
Go to College, get a math, physics or engineering degree.
Apply for OCS and Flight Scool.

FY 06 ended in October 06. So that's a falsehood right there.
As far as being a pilot, the Navy has more planes than either.
The AF isn't going to let you learn how to be a pilot while you're in the DEP.

If you want to be a pilot, first you will need your college degree(Bachelors Degree)
if the recruiters are telling you that you can just walk in off the street and become a fighter pilot, then I have some beachfront property in Arizona to sell you!
