Call a local spay/neuter clinic and explain your situation. The veterinary staff can refer you to a local organization that provides free spay/neuter certificates. Another option might be to call the local no-kill shelter and ask who spays/neuters their cats, and call that veterinarian. You will likely be offered free or very discounted services for your cats.

You should have considered not getting two cats or a cat at all if you could not afford to get them spayed/neutered. There is no way to keep them from mating. The only thing you can do is keep them in separate rooms at all times- which isn't fair to them at all. You need to get one of them fixed- if only one, get the girl because she will go into heat twice or three times a year if not. Also, you can sometimes go to a humane society shelter and pay around $25 for a certificate which many vets accept and you can get your cat spayed/neutered for free or very cheap. Call around to find one that does this.

If you don't get him neutered ot her spayed, or keep them apart, you're going to get kittens.

Probably when the female is too young to successfully go through pregnancy and delivery, to boot. At the vet hospital where I work we recently did an emergency C-section on a cat who had gotten pregnant by her brother when she was less than five months old. One of her kittens died in the birth canal, and we were barely able to save her and the other three. Then she had no idea what the kittens were or what to do with them, and thought they were the reason for her pain and desperately wanted to get away from them.

YES--you're gonna HAVE to come up with the money (see if your vet will take payments)--it only costs $40 - $50 to have ONE of them fixed--and you want to get your FEMALE done FIRST. You didn't say how old these siblings are, but a female can come into her first heat as young as 4 months. And, NO--you definitely do NOT want brothers & sisters mating---this is in-breeding in the HIGHEST form and creats all types of problems. I hate to dispute this fact with Tara K, but--as long as your male cannot smell that the female is in heat, he's not going to spray. And, it's not just YOUR male cat--if she gets outside when she's in heat, it could be ANY male cat--but rest assured, you WILL have a load of kittens. Not to mention that--if you have never experienced a female cat in heat--you do NOT want to. This is good for 10 - 12 totally sleepless days & NIGHTS when all the LOUD meowing and hollering begins. Best of luck to you in getting your "Lady" fixed SOON. He can wait--SHE cannot.

Either keep them completely separate from each other until you can afford to neuter them, or get the male neutered now (usually not very expensive) and get the female spayed later. Look up low cost spay/neuter clinics in your area to see if you can get them both done at the same time which would be preferable.

I really dont want to sound like the mean person answering the question... but... shouldn't you have done something about saving up the money before you got 2 cats... male and female... to get them fixed? Now you're gonna have quite a few more to get fixed, or spend quite a bit more to get her spayed while pregnant. Just silly. I hope you can get the money somehow, or afford somebody to watch them 24/7 and keep him off of her.

Best of luck.

If no spading or neutering, anything short of making very sure you never leave them together is the only other alternative, or find a new home for one or the other.. Sorry, but one really needs to be fixed.

If you can't afford to get at least one of them fixed, perhaps you can't afford two cats. If you can, get the male fixed. It will be cheapest and most effective and keeping them from mating. Also, if you don't fix the male, he will spray and it will make your place smell TERRIBLE. (I speak from experience on that one.) Horny male cats are awful.

Seriously, seek a discounted rate. I got my male fixed for under $30 at the humane shelter.

Maybe call your local humane society and see how much they would charge to do it. Here it is only 65 dollars to spay a femal and 45 dollars to fix a male.
