For various reasons, polygamy was one of the first popularly known things about the early Mormon church, and was used by states to condemn them and attack them. I know many people who know very little about Mormons.

There have been some small break-off groups of "fundamentalist Mormons" who have still accepted polygamy. They are not linked to the LDS church, but when news comes out of these people being arrested, it unfortunately reinforces the stereotype. The media does not always make it clear that these groups are separate from the LDS church.

Clearly, the church abandoned polygamy long ago. However, negative stereotypes can be extremely pervasive and difficult to get rid of. I think the best way to resolve this is education. In high school, we had an LDS family that was very active in confronting the stereotypes, and I think our (small) community was able to accept and embrace them much more easily because they took the effort.

Probably because of groups like Warren Jeff's cult and other non-traditional Latter Day Saints who still practice polygamy. Even though polygamy is no longer recognized by the LDS church, there are a few people of that faith who still practice polygamy and those are the ones who make the headlines.

Sensationalism sells. The media is not going to talk about the normal everyday LDS who is in a traditional monogamous relationship. That would not be controversial would it? So people unfamiliar with a faith will judge the faith based on the more prominent people in the public eye.

Yes, they do. (See, without providing the context, that's as accurate as your answer Joshsy) Polygamy is still a doctrine of the Mormon church, and Mormon prophets and apostles have taught that polygamy will be restored on the Earth at some point and that it is the "norm" in Mormon heaven. Mormon prophets have even taught that both Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ are polygamists. Mormon policy currently forbids men to be married to more than one living wife, however if a man's wife dies, he is free to be sealed "for time and eternity" to another wife. In the next life he will be married to all his wives for eternity. So yes, I'd say they still practice polygamy, just not in the same way they did in the nineteenth century. Most Mormons today won't agree with me, even though I am doctrinally and historically 100% correct. Particularly Mormon women today get pretty bent out of shape when it is suggested that they will be asked to share their husband with other wives in heaven, particularly when it is made clear that their ultimate glory is to help their husband and sister wives create more spiritual offspring (eternal increase). Honestly, I think most modern Mormons, women in particular, just haven't thought through the implications of Mormon doctrine surrounding polygamy, still in force and waiting to take effect, whether in this life or in the next. But I can't blame them, because the modern Mormon church does a really good job of sweeping that sort of thing firmly under the carpet. Instead, it emphasizes "eternal families" and "warm fuzzy feelings" and programs, programs, programs to keep members busy.

Some sects of Mormons do it still, unfortunately, because they carry the same title as you people associate their practices with your own. It is fairly common knowledge that LDS have not practiced it for years, but most people do not care about the truth. You should see my last answer concerning a Christian marrying a LDS, you would think I was Lucifer himself with all of the thumbs down I got

Just watch 20/20 every so often or like Night Line. They will run a propaganda piece on how there are Mormons with 7 wives, 19 children. They try to show the piece as being nice, honest, etc but its spun off in a way to show incest, evil, wickedness, non bible, etc.

Remember who controls the TV and then you will realize why lies are pumped to us daily in all we see.

Because polygamy very much exists today and they claim to be part of the Mormon church. It's a generalization and I don't believe it.

There's a very good series on HBO called "Big Love". It's about a sect of Mormons who DO have multiple wives. Unfortunately, a lot of people who watch it apparently can't grasp that it's fictional.

Some do have multiple wives. I glad to hear that it is no longer supported by the church. Just like any other organization, there are some that claim to belong, yet don't follow all the practices and guidelines.

Because they are idiots and believe everything they see on TV and read on the internet. Instead of going to the source, they get their info from people who know nothing about the topic they want to know about.

Most people are not a repository of information on any one denomination or church. Encyclopedias of religion often have 2,000 entries or more for religions and churches and sects.

I'll make sure to check out FLDS.
