I am a college Sophomore. I am currently majoring in Psychology. I was researching what I could do with my degree once I get it, and a career as a California Correctional Officer (Peace Officer) caught my attention.

----With a job as a Correctional or Youth Correctional Officer, I can earn $73,000 a year plus health and benefits, and it requires no college degree.

----With a job as a Youth Correctional Counselor, I can earn $81,000 a year plus health and benefits, and it requires a college degree.

What's your opinion about a career in the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation? Is the pay worth the risk? Is there any risk?

All input is greatly appreciated!!!

Thank you!!!

Also, this job seems to good to be true.

The Department of Labor Statistics says that

"Median annual earnings of correctional officers and jailers were $33,600 in May 2004. The middle 50 percent earned between $26,560 and $44,200. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $22,630, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $54,820. Median annual earnings in the public sector were $44,700 in the Federal Government, $33,750 in State government, and $33,080 in local government."

Please help!!!!

I can't speak from personal experience, but I know a decent amount of youth probation officers, youth counselors (directly hired by or working in attachment with the state), and department of corrections- in general their experiences state this:

A. do not work with adults, it is scary and it is very low in the warm fuzzy feeling. One of my friends works in the library of a correctional adult facility. Although ZERO inmates have threatened or made lewd references to her (and she's decent looking) and they all treat her with respect, she has watched a very savage beating of an inmate by other inmates before she could get security over there.

B. As a correctional officer, 95% of the kids will hate you. 5% of the kids will be inspired and try to clean up and do something with their lives. 3% of those kids will succeed. They will rarely if ever contact you, to let you know that things have improved- but they will NEVER forget you and ALWAYS credit you to those around them.

C. As a counselor, things will hurt. You will hear horrors. Intern for this before you try it as a career.

PS You should never go into these careers for the money. Otherwise you end up like the crappy cops that hate their jobs and other people hate, do it because you have the guts and the desire to help others.

If only police were peace officers, so many people wouldn't consider them the enemy. Instead of being the front line of the legal system and deciding whether or not a law should apply to a situation, they are taught the tyrannical idea called law enforcement where no matter how stupid a law is in the current situation, the law is the law and must be enforced (sound like something a robot would do, doesn't it?).

You should contact the recruitment officers. They know the entire hiring process, and can tell you the specific hiring process for their agency. Every agency is different, and a vague answer is not what you are looking for.

No, join the CHP instead. Check out their web site. The money is just as good, you can move just about anywhere, and it is generally safer. Check out that aspect of the jobs.

If you do, please don't employ an egregious euphemism like "Peace Officer".
