Spend what you can afford, but get something she will like and appreciate. That is the best "price" to pay. The ring and the moment will be pricess, actually, if you know what I mean.
But, if you're looking for a traditional answer, and something the ladies will like (haha), then look to spend the equivalent of about 2-3 months of your salary.

There really isn't an average, it totally depends upon what you can afford. Don't believe the junk about it being a certain number of months' salary. You can get lovely rings for 100 and up - around 500 they are quite nice, and around a grand they start getting really beautiful. The ring my husband bought me has a solitaire and smaller shoulder stones, 14k yellow gold band, and was around 800. It's just wonderful because he chose it, and it suits me!

it all depends on what you can AFFORD... i think there is some saying about 2-3 months salary should be spent... you can get a 2ctw round solitaire from jewelryexchange.com for $1990...but i dont know how good of quality it is... pay attention to the 4 Cs ... the better the quality, the more expensive... engagement rings can also be gemstones or cz if the person would prefer one or the other...

Since there is a huge markup on diamonds getting a good price means doing your homework first. Look online at www.bluenile.com, learn the 4 C's, and search for diamonds.
I heard average $3000, I spent close to $15,000 a few years back. That was about 2 months salary for me and money I had already saved.

Forget the "two months salary" rule. I think it depends on your lady. If she doesn't want a lot of debt, then you need to consider that. My hubby spent about $1200 on my engagement/wedding ring and it came with a full warranty. (We got one of the stones in it replaced for free a few years ago.) He just used a tax return he got to purchase it. Like I said, it would depend on the woman. Some women love fancy big rings, others are just happy with something really simple, but I wouldn't recommend going into debt for it--you don't want to have to pay for that and a wedding. Debt is not a good thing to take into a marriage.

Mine was a bit under $9,000. We went to a reputable jeweler that offered a lifetime plan that includes cleanings every six months. They also have quite a few that are lower cost. I agree that $2000 will get you a very nice ring. However, you really should get what you can afford. You can always upgrade later as an anniversary gift.
Just be sure to get one with a lifetime plan that includes free repair, cleaning, etc. It pays for itself within just a couple of years.

The rule of thumb when I bought one was a month's salary.
Which was about $300 for both rings in 1958!
It cost me $500 for a replacement wedding ring in 2003.

My husband-to-be spent an arm and a leg on a ring that he completely surprised me with (a Leo diamond from Kay Jewelers). At first I was a little upset that he spent so much and tried to get him to take it back for something smaller...but he wouldn't. A few weeks later, I realized that is what he wanted me to have and I know that I am going to wear it for the rest of my life...diamonds can be an investment...I never heard of one decreasing in value. If you are in the market for one, please get it from a nice store and not ebay or walmart, which seem to be popular answers from this board. Your wife will cherish it forever.

According to an interview I saw with the CEO of a major jewelry store most men spend $2,500 on a ring. The higher end would be $5,000.
