It depends on the drug... it could be anywhere from a day to 1 month. What drug is it?

It depends on the half-life of the drug (The duration of action of a drug is known as its half life. This is the period of time required for the concentration or amount of drug in the body to be reduced). The half life of drugs can vary from hours to up to a month. That is for 1/2 the drug to be eliminated, then the amount left is eliminated slowly over time. An example would be methadone which can have up to a 190 hour half-life. In addition to the initial drug, the body often produces metabolites (other often active substances) The 1st metabolite of Methadone takes effect approximately 72hours after the first dose is taken. The metabolites have to be eliminated also and have their own half-life. This is why a person will have withdrawals for 15-21 days after taking Methadone for any significant period.

Another example would be Codarone which has an approximate half-life of 25 days.

If you give us an idea of the drugs you are interested in we can be more specific.

It depends on the type of drug. Some drugs stay in the body and can have a cumulative effect while others do not. Warfarin, for example, takes a day or two to start working and, I think, about a week to exit the body once treatment has finished. I was on Warfarin for 6 months back in 2001 for DVT treatment.

The best person/people to ask would be your doctor, practice nurse or pharmacist. Your medication(s) information leaflet might tell you as well.

It depends on many factors, so you'd best contact your Dr. ,pharmacy, or the Poison Control. Things to consider are: name of the drug, the dosage, your age and weight, the state of your health, and what other drugs or food you have ingested. If its a real concern, I would go to an ER.
