Any statement involving volcanic eruptions that produce more pollution and/ or CO2 than human activity over any time period must be accompanied with a link?

2007-09-02 15:14:55 · 13 answers · asked by PD 6 in Environment Global Warming

I hear this stuff all the time, and when I do the research (because they never post a link) I always find it is a horribly incorrect statement. Also, it is hard to find data on individual volcanic eruptions, so it always takes a while to disprove them. Anyone have a link to emissions data for major eruptions?

here is a link to an old abstract of a paper on SO2 emissions from coal fire plants saying the human activity may be releasing more SO2 than natural sources:

http://www.caer.uky.edu/iea/ieaper16.shtml

compare this link showing human SO2 emissions by country
http://www.ec.gc.ca/acidrain/acidr/acidr_s2_e.htm

to this link showing an individual volcanic eruption (pinatubo) in 1991:

http://www.ec.gc.ca/acidrain/acidr/acidr_s2_e.htm

the eruption of pinatubo almost released as much SO2 as the United States emits in one year due to human activity.

and this link shows that significant uncertainty exists in the amount of SO2 released by human and natural emitters
where human acivity could be responsible for as little as 25% of the total, or as much as 86%:

http://www.ace.mmu.ac.uk/eae/Acid_Rain/Older/Acidic_Emissions.html

human emissions of SO2 continue to be
decreasing each year, good news for preventing acid rain, but bad news for global warming.

I could come up with lots of rules for this section lol. I think at the top of the list is "no one mentions Al Gore."

Sure and while you're at it make people post the link to the drowing polar bears, etc.

You can make any rule you want, but how are you going to enforce it. Run to each city with a rolled up newspaper and whap them over the head and say bad poster, bad.

By the way I did find out about the poor bolar bears it was a storm that got them. But, it not how the press and Al Gore presented it.

"The researchers returned to the vicinity a few days after a fierce storm and found four dead bears floating in the water. "Extrapolation of survey data suggests that on the order of 40 bears may have been swimming and that many of those probably drowned as a result of rough seas caused by high winds," the researchers say in a report set to be released today."

And here's my links

Well Patrick, just send them an Email, telling them that in the real world humanity generates 130 times more CO2 than volcanic emissions, but as far as SO2 pollution goes, nothing compares to a volcano, except a large meteor impact, in an Anyhdrate ocean filled basin.

And tell them, that Trevor does not know everything.

sure.

why don't you give us an "approved" list that we can pull "data" from?

we all know that the "experts" NEVER skew their data. even gov't agencies such as NASA are right with the temp. data.

that's why we don't need any modeling info., because "it's right" and doesn't need to be checked.

on the contrary, any link we do use is poo poo'ed as sponsored by big oil, a right wing blog, or __________. (you fill in the blank cuz you're so good at it).

remember, statistics never lie, only staticians.

and yes, i found that saying on a right wing blog, for which i have no link.

i'm fully aware it doesn't count.

Can we just make it a rule that people verify their information before stating it as fact.

Then we can have an end to some of these other claims...

GW is caused by moose burps
The sun is getting hotter
We're moving closer to the sun
GW stopped in 1998
Only the northern hemisphere is warming
Antarctica is expanding
The world is cooling
Icecaps melting don't affect sea levels
Scientists can't predict the weather...
Global cooling in the 1970's
GW was invented by Al Gore
Temps were warmer in the Middle Ages
Greenland used to be lush and green
Rises in CO2 levels always follow rises in temps
1934 was the hottest year
More CO2 is good
Temps are only recorded on land
GW is caused by magnetic polar shift
Climate models are inaccurate
Lots of scientists dispute GW

Just the first 20 that come to mind, there's plenty more. Strange how the arguments used by some skeptics are so short lived, if they had any credibility to them they'd stand up to scrutiny and stand the test of time.

Make that a link to a legitimate--and current--science site or journal, and I'll agree.

Agree, but only if we please can we have YOUTUBE /video clips too? Not everyone is as knowledgeable on GW as you lot, nor understands all the issues. At least video links are very accessible to all - the point of Y/As?

Here's actual data, showing that annually, volcanoes put out about 1/100 as much as Man.

EDIT - OK. More than you ever wanted to know about this. With about 50 references to the literature. Not easy to pick out one number, though. They really treat this topic in massive detail.:
