Need alot more info that this.
What are you feeding your dog? Have you tried changing brands since the dog stopped eating? Is your brand on the pet food recall list?
Did the vet check for worms, by stool sample?
Did you have a blood panel run?
How about a dental exam? Tooth or throat pain can make eating painful.
Are you using store bought flea preventative/spray? These can cause toxic side-effects, as can pesticides and other household products.
Is your dog spayed or neutered?
Is your dog going through a growth spurt?
Is it extremely hot where you live?
If your dog is vomiting, has frequent diarrhea, appears to have bloat or stomach discomfort, or is lethargic - Go to another vet and get a second opinion.
If your dog is otherwise healthy, you should exercise with a brisk 30 minute walk twice a day, before meals. This helps to get the bowels cleared, and works up an appetite.
Allow the dog 30 minutes for each meal, then remove the bowl. Always keep fresh cold water available.
Use stainless, ceramic or glass bowls. Plastic holds bacteria.
This is the best way to monitor food intake, and overall health.
You can also supplement the diet with a homemade diet of 1 part boiled sweet potatoes with three parts chicken (deboned).
Best of luck to you both.

Well, no one here is going to be able to tell you more than the vet, especially since you haven't given us any details. You need to ask the vet again to explain the possibilities, run more tests depending on what (if any) tests have already been run, or go to another vet for a second opinion. Not eating and loosing weight could be a lot of things, from something as simple as it's too hot for the dog to feel like eating and he's not getting enough calories, poor quality dog food, or he has intestinal parasites to something as complicated as pancratic enzyme insufficiency, megaesophagus, or cancer. Only a vet who does bloodwork and other medical tests can give you an explination.

You definitely need to get a second opinion from a different vet. Have you tried switching the food? If you feed him dry, mix a little wet food or even buy doggy gravy which they sell at many pet stores. However, don't completely switch him over to wet food because this can cause severe diarrhea if he does eat it- just mix a little in. Have the other vet run blood tests and anything else needed so they can eliminate any diseases/illnesses. Good luck and hope he gets better!

Did they examine a fecal sample? Did they run blood work? I have a 13 mo. old female Akita that started having chronic diarrhea, wasn't eating well, and started losing weight. We tested (and prophylacticaly treated) for various intestinal parasites, did various blood work and have finally identified the problem as an insufficiency in pancreatic enzymes. But it took a lot of effort to get there.
I would discuss your problem with your vet, and if they don't seem willing to do what's needed to track it down, change vets.
I hope you can find the problem. Keep after it, and good luck.

I would get a second opinion.
I would also look at the food you are feeding. I've seen several dogs that could eat all day long, and look as if they were starving to death. Switching to a higher quality, more digestable food solved the problem.

Then go to another vet and get a second opinion. They need to run blood test to determine the cause.
Have you tried changing the dog's food or has something changed in your household?

I don't get it, you took the dog to the vet and you got no explanation as to why this is happening? Is your vet incompetent or did you not understand what was wrong with the dog? You need to get back with the vet and demand that he help your dog.
