Have you tried explaining the whole thing to your father that you just like the style? Maybe if you did, he'll understand. Then again, it could be hard to convince him, so try to gain the support of someone important. This should help. What does your mother feel about this? As long as your dressing is not too revealing or obsene, it should be okay. yep. (did i spell obsene correctly?)

People do judge books by the cover, if you dress goth, others will think you are making a statement about what you are etc.
I've had experience with this situation and it did not end well,
ie night clubs, drugs, dropping out of college and numerous other problems. You're Dad is wise to be cautious. Please think, your Dad is looking out for your best interests even if you can't see it this way at the moment.

"Goth" is both a style, and a type of music, and a type of club scene... that vampire-type stuff. It has dark, depressing, scary "death" type overtones. The usual adherent is a disconnected and nihlistic slacker. I can see why he would be worried.
If you are wearing black lace and DocMartens and still listening to the average radio top-40 "pop" stations... that is NOT Goth.
Frankly, you can get plenty of gothic-style clothes at Wal-Mart in the fall, from before Halloween through Christmas because it is "dressy"... again, black lace, dark velvet and velour, fishnet stockings, and all that.

If you do not want people to think that you are goth then you shouldn't wear goth clothes because people will judge you.

Thats the same thing, as the parents not wanting their kids to wear the baggy pants that show their boxers, and the huge chains. It sends off a TERRIBLE IMAGE! In general, at least in my neighborhood, if a girl dressed gothic she was seen as a lost cause/druggie. Your father is being a good father by not wanting you to dress like that, he doesn't want people getting a bad impression of you, and I don't blame him. Meet him in the middle, reason, get his opinions on a few outfits you find online, and negotiate. Don't be hostil, negotiate.

Well, he probably just wants you to look successful and like you're ready to be a responsible adult soon (I'm assuming you're in high school). Sometimes my mom is weird and won't let me buy clothes because she thinks they look too "punk" (which is weird, because they aren't, and I'm a nerd). I empathize with you but he's just doing what he thinks is best.
Also, are you going to buy the clothes yourself or did you want him to buy it for you? That could be part of the problem.
