It looks like you have wavier hair. Try getting Frizz Ease products and just let it loose. When you get out of the shower, comb your hair and then start putting in products. I start with their spray-in conditioner, then a curling spray and finally curling gel. Just scrunch it as you apply the gel. Don't load it on because it'll get "crispy!" Just a little for some structure.

You have no choice but to straighten it with a straightening iron. If your careful, it could stay straight for up to three days. Afterward, pull back the top half of your hair and clip it into a cute bar clip, leaving the bottom loose. If you didn't straighten it perfectly or if it's been a few days since you straightened it, pulling half of it back will reduce the volume at the bottom of your hair, making it instantly look neater. Any loose waves will seem intensional. Clipping your hair will instantly look much more polished than a pony tail, and it's just as quick to do. I also recommend you get a long side-swept bang. The bang alone will completely transform your look.

I think, you should put your hair down, to not only show people you ONLY put it in a bun, but you also grew your hair over the summer. If your mom lets you, you can put some nice washable highlights.
They can be found in any drugstore.
