how does it affect the consumer? what kinds of advantages/disadvantages are there?

Ive used all of them since their birth. They all have their pros and cons. But basically, its this for me now...
WindowsXP for my personal desktop machines. More toys and games and just-to-be-pretty junk.
Linux for my servers. Better operation on much less hardware.
Mac for laptops and portables. I just want them to do standard computer and internet stuff without having to worry about whether or not it will work.
Windows Vista WILL be good eventually. It has alot of hooks for programmers to use in order to make much cooler applications. But right now many of the graphics video card people and sound card people still hve to create drivers for it. And no one has really created anything to run on it. So at the moment, if you switch to Vista, everything you ran on your old computer will either run like crap OR maybe manage to run like it used to. But nothing really runs better. Yet.

Windows:
Pros:
Mainstream
Has the most software
Cons:
'You're on your own' when it comes to support (mostly)
Tends to have a lot of software bugs/security holes that are -exploited-
Macintosh:
Pros:
Easy to use
More integrated with the hardware
Great Support
Cons:
Has unexploited security holes (Not a lot, but Macs aren't invincible)
Less mainstream, meaning less software
Linux:
Pros:
Tends to work with almost any piece of hardware
Open Source (Free/You can do what you want with it)
Cons:
Not even close to mainstream,
You need to use the command line for almost everything
