There are truly mental and behavioral issues here. People who do self -mutilations feel quilty and feel that they have to punish themselves. They have poor self-image and self-concept. and feel worthless as productive individuals.

Van der Kolk, Perry, and Herman (1991) conducted a study of patients who exhibited cutting behavior and suicidality. They found that exposure to physical or sexual abuse, physical or emotional neglect, and chaotic family conditions during childhood, latency and adolescence were reliable predictors of the amount and severity of cutting. The earlier the abuse began, the more likely the subjects were to cut and the more severe their cutting was. Sexual abuse victims were most likely of all to cut. They summarize,
...neglect [was] the most powerful predictor of self-destructive behavior. This implies that although childhood trauma contributes heavily to the initiation of self-destructive behavior, lack of secure attachments maintains it. Those ... who could not remember feeling special or loved by anyone as children were least able to ...control their self-destructive behavior

this same paper, van der Kolk et al. note that dissociation and frequency of dissociative experiences appear to be related to the presence of self-injurious behavior. Dissociation in adulthood has also been positively linked to abuse, neglect, or trauma as a child

Patients diagnosed with borderline personality disorder.

It has been demonstrated (Carlson, 1986) that reduced levels of serotonin lead to increased aggressive behavior in mice. In this study, serotonin inhibitors produced increased aggression and serotonin exciters decreased aggression in mice. Since serotonin levels have also been linked to depression, and depression has been positively identified as one of the long-term consequences of childhood physical abuse (Malinosky-Rummell and Hansen, 1993), this could explain why self-injurious behaviors are seen more frequently among those abused as children than among the general population (Malinosky-Rummel and Hansen, 1993). Apparently, the most promising line of investigation in this area is the hypothesis that self-harm may result from decreases in necessary brain neurotransmitters.

I will assume you have someone in mind by asking this question but it does not necessarily follow that people who do injury to themselves, ultimately commit suicide. People who use cutting as a means of coping with their problems actually find relief by doing so! It is more prevalent in females but purposely injuring ones self knows no specific age, gender, race, ethnicity or financial status.

HIV and hepatitis are two of the dangers of cutting themselves by actually sharing cutting tools! Infection, scarring, numbness and even death can result depending on where and how deep the cut (s) is. Many people 'get away' with doing this for long periods of time by hiding what they've done. They sometimes cut themselves in places that cannot be seen or wear clothing inappropriate for the season such as wearing long sleeves in summer.

If you know of someone who is doing this to themselves urge them to get help. They need to speak with someone they trust and professional counselling is necessary. If it is a teen, speak to someone you trust like a teacher, minister or your own doctor! Allow someone to advise you on what to do if a friend is abusing themselves. SAFE, Self Abuse Finally Ends - Alternatives is an organization that can be reached by calling 1-800-366-8288. SAFE can help you and the person who is injuring themselves. Good luck!

the fewer it bothers you the smaller the priority is. each and everything consistently gets extra beneficial and herpes, so what, hundreds of people get it, youl be superb. you pick a 2nd opinion however from a expert. yet you shouldnt kill your self! thats stupid, all and sundry makes errors and you shouldnt be so angy with your self. I understand which you incredibly pick to punish your self yet this manner is in basic terms too severe and could bring about chaos. each and everything blows over and that i understand which you think of thats impossible on the 2nd in spite of the fact that it is going to. In time. you need to do slightly learn on what youve have been given, attempt to settle for it and help your self. and you will meet somebody you will be with once you least anticipate it. x

some people feel like the world is against them. they feel like there is noone to talk to and that the only way they can feel better is to take drugs or even kill themselves. but that is not the answer. There is help for everyone out there. they can takl to their parents, grandparents, teachers. preachers. there is always someone there to help, if the person would just ask.

well ive done all of this. (attempted suicide.)
its because well sometimes you feel the world is against you.

drugs: influence?? feel of control. like the head rush.

cutting: feel of control. would rather cause self injury than let others cause it.

suicide: rather be dead than feel pain. dont think life is god for them.

all of these are accompanied by some mental illnesses, and depression.
ive done all (attempted suicide.) and have many illnesses. it just a matter of chemial unbalcnces in your head.

more questions??
